Arsenal’s summer may have just got a lot more complicated. The Premier League champions have been quietly building toward a blockbuster move for Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, but there’s a major problem. Jose Mourinho doesn’t want to let him go.
According to The Telegraph’s Sam Wallace, Mourinho has told Real Madrid’s hierarchy he wants all his key players to stay. That includes Vinicius, Kylian Mbappe, and Jude Bellingham. No exceptions.
It’s a blow for Mikel Arteta. And it couldn’t come at a worse time.
Arsenal’s Interest Is Real and Approved at Every Level
This isn’t idle speculation. David Ornstein of The Athletic reported that Arsenal have internally approved a move for the Brazilian winger. The interest exists at “all levels” of the club, from the coaching staff to the boardroom.
ESPN confirmed that Arsenal are the only realistic destination for Vinicius this summer, should he and Madrid fail to agree a new contract. Sky Sports added that the 26-year-old is one of several forward targets, alongside Julian Alvarez, Yan Diomande, and Bradley Barcola.
But here’s the catch — there have been no club-to-club talks yet. This is still at an early stage.
Why does Arteta want him so badly? Simple. Arsenal lack of top forwards and also the fact that lost the Champions League final on penalties to PSG in Budapest back in May. They’ve already won the Premier League title. Now they want more.
Christos Tzolis arrived from Club Brugge for £34m to replace Leandro Trossard. Arsenal also missed out on Morgan Rogers, who joined Chelsea for a staggering £117m. Vinicius represents a step up from every alternative on their list.

The Mourinho Factor and a Complicated History
Mourinho returned to Real Madrid in June on a three-year deal, 13 years after his first spell. He inherited a squad that hadn’t won a major trophy in two seasons. His mission? Restore order and win again.
So it’s no surprise he wants his best players around him. Selling Vinicius would undermine that project entirely.
But the relationship between Mourinho and Vinicius carries baggage. During the Champions League last February, when Mourinho was still managing Benfica, his player Gianluca Prestianni was accused of directing a racial slur at Vinicius. The incident triggered UEFA’s anti-racism protocol and halted the match for ten minutes.
Mourinho’s post-match response drew widespread criticism. He declined to condemn Prestianni and suggested Vinicius invited controversy through his celebrations. Vinicius was reportedly left feeling “repulsed” by those comments.
Sky Sports has since reported that the pair have been in contact and are ready to start the new season with a “clean slate.” Still, it’s fair to wonder how deep that reconciliation really runs.
What Happens Next?
Here’s where it gets interesting. Vinicius’s contract expires in June 2027. Madrid have been trying to extend it for months, but talks have stalled over a reported €10m gap in salary demands. He currently earns around £400,000 per week.
Real Madrid face a familiar dilemma:
- Accept a massive fee this summer to avoid losing him for free
- Trust that Mourinho can convince him to sign a new deal
- Risk Vinicius running down his contract and walking away
Madrid have already spent heavily this window. Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, and Bernardo Silva have all arrived. They’re even chasing Manchester City’s Rodri — the same player whose 2024 Ballon d’Or win over Vinicius prompted Madrid to boycott the ceremony.
For Arsenal, the wage demands alone present a headache. Matching £400,000 per week could disrupt ongoing contract negotiations with Declan Rice.
So where does this leave things? Mourinho wants Vinicius to stay. Madrid don’t want to sell. Arsenal haven’t made a formal approach. And yet, the clock is ticking.
If Madrid can’t agree a new deal, the economics of this situation could eventually override Mourinho’s wishes. Arsenal know that. They’re watching, waiting, and hoping the contract stalemate forces Madrid’s hand.
Don’t expect a quick resolution. But don’t rule it out either.
