It’s official. Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign 16-year-old Axel Donczew from Cardiff City, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the move with his trademark “here we go” on July 26.
The Welsh wonderkid has already completed his medical at the club. He’s expected to sign this week and join the Gunners’ academy setup as part of a wider youth recruitment drive this summer.
So who exactly is Donczew, and why are the Premier League champions so keen on a teenager with just two senior appearances to his name?
A Record-Breaker at 15
Donczew’s name first hit the headlines in October 2025. Cardiff City faced Newport County in the EFL Trophy, and two age records fell in a single night.
Teammate Rob Tankiewicz started the match at 16 years and 117 days old, breaking Aaron Ramsey’s 18-year record as the club’s youngest ever player. But Tankiewicz held that title for just 64 minutes. Donczew came off the bench at 15 years and 234 days, immediately claiming the record for himself.
It was a moment that didn’t go unnoticed. Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy said after the game:
“I think if they’re good enough, and he clearly is, then they’re old enough for us with Axel.”
He added: “For Axel to come on and show real signs of what we see in training is an insight into how high our hopes are for him.”
Born in Wales to Polish and Bulgarian parents, Donczew is comfortable playing as an attacking midfielder or out wide. He went on to make a second senior appearance against AFC Wimbledon in December 2025 before returning to academy football.
He was also named joint winner of Cardiff’s Academy Player of the Season. Not bad for a kid born in 2010.
Why Arsenal Want Him Now
This isn’t a random punt. The Donczew signing fits into a bigger picture at Arsenal.
The club’s academy is going through serious changes this summer. Per Mertesacker stepped down as Academy Manager after eight years, and Arsenal have appointed Pascal De Maesschalck as his replacement. The Belgian, who previously worked at Club Brugge and AS Monaco, officially starts on August 1.
Sporting director Andrea Berta has been clear about the direction. Arsenal want to strengthen their pipeline of young talent — from the UK and abroad.
It hasn’t all gone smoothly, though. The Gunners lost out to Manchester City in the race for highly rated winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester City. Young defender Mishel Nduka also left for City after turning down a new deal.
Donczew’s signing helps offset those setbacks. Here’s what makes him stand out:
- Record-breaking Cardiff debut at just 15 years old
- Versatility across attacking midfield and wide roles
- Wales youth international at U15 and U17 level
- Strong technical ability praised by his senior coach
The comparisons to Ramsey are inevitable. The Wales captain made the exact same journey — Cardiff academy to Arsenal — back in 2008 for around £5 million. He went on to make over 250 appearances for the Gunners and scored winning goals in two FA Cup finals.
Nobody’s putting that kind of pressure on Donczew yet. But the pathway is there.
What Comes Next
Don’t expect to see Donczew in an Arsenal first-team shirt right away. He’ll join the Hale End academy and develop under De Maesschalck’s new setup.
The finer details of the transfer haven’t been fully disclosed, though Cardiff are expected to receive a compensation package.
For Arsenal, it’s a statement about how they want to build. Yes, the club is chasing big-money signings like Bruno Guimaraes. But they’re also quietly investing in the next generation.
Donczew has the talent, the record-breaking credentials, and now the platform. Whether he can follow in Ramsey’s footsteps remains to be seen. But at 16, he’s already ahead of schedule.
