Arsenal have locked down another promising academy talent. Callan Hamill, the 17-year-old Scottish defender, has officially signed his first professional contract with the club ahead of the 2026/27 season. It’s a deserved reward after a debut campaign that saw him rack up 35 appearances across three different age groups.
So, who exactly is the youngster putting pen to paper at the Emirates?
From St. Johnstone to North London
Hamill arrived at Arsenal from Scottish Premiership side St. Johnstone in the summer of 2025. He wasn’t just any academy recruit, either. He’d already made his senior debut for Saints as a substitute, giving him a taste of professional football before his 16th birthday.
That experience clearly helped him settle quickly. Within months, he’d established himself as captain of Arsenal’s under-18 side.
He didn’t just stay at that level, though. Arsenal’s coaching staff pushed him into under-19 and under-21 action too. That kind of trust in a teenager who’d just relocated from Scotland says a lot.
“I moved away from home last year and joined Arsenal last season and had a really good season,” Hamill said. “It’s been a good year so far, so looking forward to kicking on.”
Born on March 1, 2009, Hamill only turned 17 in March. That means he’s been eligible for a professional contract for just a few months. Arsenal clearly didn’t want to wait around.
A Versatile Defender With European Pedigree
What makes Hamill stand out? His versatility. He’s comfortable at both right-back and centre-back, and Arsenal have used that flexibility regularly.

“I think I made a good impression,” he added. “Playing a lot of games. I was really happy with last season.”
On the international stage, he’s earned four caps for Scotland’s under-17s and stepped up to the under-19 setup. He hasn’t hidden his pride about that, either.
“When I pull on that Scotland jersey, it does really make a difference,” Hamill said. “It’s obviously a really proud moment playing for my country.”
What Comes Next for Hamill?
The young defender has already had a glimpse of life with Arsenal’s senior squad. He’s trained alongside first-team players and seems to have taken plenty from the experience.
“They were really good at giving you tips and pointers on what to work on,” he explained. “Taking advice from the best can only help you get better.”
He’ll remain eligible for under-18 football next season. But expect him to feature more regularly at under-21 level as he continues climbing the pathway.
It’s also worth noting the broader academy picture. Arsenal released 15 players this summer when contracts expired, including right-back Josh Nichols. That creates space and opportunity for prospects like Hamill to push forward.
Can he eventually break into Mikel Arteta’s first-team plans? It’s early days. But Arseblog noted that the club has shown significant faith in Hamill’s ability, praising his reading of the game and willingness to push forward from defence.
