Arsenal’s Fire Sale: Which Players Could Be Sacrificed to Land Vinicius Jr?

Arsenal Players Who Could Be Sold to Fund Vinicius Jr Transfer

Nobody had this on their summer bingo card. Arsenal, fresh off a Premier League title defence, are now reportedly exploring a deal for Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior. It’s the kind of transfer that makes you do a double take.

But here’s the catch. A move for a player of Vini Jr’s calibre doesn’t come cheap. Reports from Sky Sports and The Telegraph suggest the asking price could reach £137m, with Arsenal willing to offer the Brazilian a record-breaking contract worth over £400,000 a week. That’s more than £100,000 above what Bukayo Saka currently earns.

So how do the Gunners pay for it?

Simple. They sell. And they sell fast.

The numbers don’t add up — yet

Arsenal have already spent around £68.5m this summer on Christos Tzolis (£34m from Club Brugge) and making Piero Hincapie’s loan permanent. They’ve only brought in roughly £32.6m through the departures of Leandro Trossard (£17m to Besiktas), Jakub Kiwior, and Karl Hein.

That’s a net loss of around £36m before even picking up the phone to Real Madrid.

With Profit and Sustainability Rules looming, Arsenal can’t just throw money at the problem. They need to raise significant funds — and several players are now on the chopping block.

Who’s heading for the exit door?

Let’s start with the most obvious candidates.

  • Gabriel Martinelli is in the final year of his deal. He scored just once in the Premier League last season. Arsenal signed him for £6m back in 2019 and could still turn a tidy profit. At 25, a fresh start might benefit everyone.
  • Ethan Nwaneri is an academy product, meaning any fee would count as pure profit on Arsenal’s books. With Max Dowman’s emergence and Eberechi Eze’s arrival, his pathway to regular minutes has narrowed considerably.
  • Kepa Arrizabalaga hasn’t dislodged David Raya as the number one. With Illan Meslier signed as a free agent this summer, Kepa’s backup role is no longer essential. Arsenal could recoup around £5m.
  • Gabriel Jesus enters the final year of his contract too. His inconsistent availability and output make him expendable, despite his value to the squad when fit.
  • Ben White has seen his minutes shrink since Jurrien Timber’s arrival. Frequent injury issues make this the right time to cash in before his value drops further.
  • Reiss Nelson and Fabio Vieira remain on the books after underwhelming loan spells. Neither has done enough to justify a spot in a title-winning squad.

Reports from BBC Sport and CaughtOffside have indicated that Arsenal are prepared to listen to offers for all of the above. Combined, these departures could generate anywhere from £100m to £190m — enough to close the gap on Vinicius.

Can Arsenal actually pull this off?

That’s the million-pound question. Well, the £137m question.

Real Madrid will hold further contract talks with Vinicius this week, according to Sky Sports. Jose Mourinho, now back at the Bernabeu, wants to keep the 26-year-old. But contract negotiations have stalled for 18 months. Vinicius wants a pay rise to around £470,000 a week, and Madrid aren’t budging.

There’s more to this puzzle too. Real Madrid’s aggressive pursuit of RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande — in a deal reportedly worth over €120m — has fuelled speculation they’re lining up a replacement. If Diomande arrives, Vinicius’s position becomes less secure.

FootballTransfers reports that Arsenal’s hierarchy, including co-chairman Josh Kroenke, view Vinicius as the type of player who could elevate the club toward back-to-back titles and Champions League glory. The financial package isn’t seen as an obstacle — provided Vinicius signals he’s interested in the move.

No club-to-club contact has taken place yet. But the interest is real, and it’s serious.

For Arsenal, the maths is straightforward. Clear out the fringe players, bank the fees, and make the most audacious Premier League signing in years. Whether they can convince Vinicius to swap Madrid for North London? That’s the part no amount of money can guarantee.
