Arsenal Edges Closer to completing £18m deal alongside £75m Bruno Guimaraes

How Arsenal's £75m Guimaraes Deal and Vieira Sale Reshape Their Squad

It’s been quite the week at the Emirates. Arsenal haven’t just signed one of the Premier League’s best midfielders — they’re also clearing the decks with a sale that’s been months in the making.

Bruno Guimaraes has officially joined Arsenal from Newcastle United in a deal worth £75m. Meanwhile, Fabio Vieira is on the verge of a permanent move to Hamburger SV for around £18m. Two deals, two very different stories, but both tell you plenty about where Mikel Arteta‘s squad is heading.

Why Guimaraes Changes Everything for Arsenal

Arsenal had been chasing Guimaraes for years. Previous attempts never quite landed, but a perfect storm hit this summer:

  • Eddie Howe stepped down as Newcastle manager at the end of July after nearly five years in charge.
  • Guimaraes told Newcastle he wanted to leave, citing a desire to compete for major trophies.
  • Newcastle had already sold Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, surpassing £240m in player sales this summer.

The 28-year-old Brazilian has signed a four-year deal with an option for a fifth. He’ll wear the number 39 shirt.

In his first interview as an Arsenal player, Guimaraes didn’t hold back. He said he felt something special from his very first conversation with Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta.

Since arriving at Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022, he’s racked up 195 appearances and 31 goals. He captained the side, won the Carabao Cup in 2025, and represented Brazil at this summer’s World Cup. His quality isn’t in question.

What does he bring? Versatility. He can sit deep as a defensive midfielder or drive forward as a box-to-box option. Partnering him with Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard gives Arteta one of the most complete midfield trios in European football. Can anyone in the league match that?

Vieira’s Long Road to Hamburg

The Guimaraes deal grabbed the headlines. But the Fabio Vieira saga has been quietly bubbling all summer — and it’s nearly done.

Vieira hasn’t featured in Arteta’s plans for two full seasons. After a loan at Porto in 2024-25, he moved to Hamburg last summer and thrived. Seven goals and five assists in 29 Bundesliga appearances is a strong return for a player who couldn’t crack Arsenal’s first team.

Hamburg wanted to keep him. The problem? They didn’t trigger the option-to-buy clause, reportedly set at around €20m. Instead, they’ve been trying to negotiate a lower fee. Arsenal wanted €18m. Hamburg offered closer to €8-9m.

Board member Eric Huwer made the club’s stance clear during pre-season, confirming a formal offer had been submitted. Personal terms between Vieira and Hamburg have already been agreed.

With Vieira’s Arsenal contract expiring in 2027, the Gunners face a choice. Accept a lower fee now or risk losing him for nothing next summer. Recent reports suggest the gap is narrowing, and a compromise looks likely before the window shuts.

Arsenal originally signed Vieira from Porto for roughly €35m in 2022. Selling him for a fraction of that stings, but it frees wages and adds funds for Arteta’s rebuild.

The Bigger Picture

These two moves tell a clear story. Arsenal aren’t just defending their Premier League title — they’re building for European dominance.

Guimaraes joins a squad that already added Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34m, goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer, and made Piero Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen permanent. That’s serious investment.

On the other side, moving Vieira on fits a pattern of trimming fringe players. Leandro Trossard has already left for Besiktas. Jakub Kiwior’s permanent switch to Porto went through in May.

Arteta knows what it takes. Last season ended with a first Premier League title in 22 years — but also a painful Champions League final defeat on penalties to PSG. Standing still isn’t an option.

With Guimaraes locked in and Vieira heading out, the champions are making sure they’re stronger, leaner, and ready for what’s next.
