Arsenal’s summer is heating up fast. Mikel Arteta watched his side cruise past Girona 4-1 in pre-season, then dropped some big hints about what’s coming next in the transfer window.
New signing Christos Tzolis scored on his debut. A €90 million deal for Bruno Guimaraes looks all but done. And then there’s the small matter of Vinicius Jr.
So what exactly is going on at the Emirates right now? Quite a lot, as it turns out.
Arteta Sends a Clear Transfer Message
Speaking after the comfortable win in Catalonia, Arteta didn’t hold back about Arsenal’s intentions this summer.
“We are really active, trying to improve and evolve the team,” Arteta said. “That’s clear.”
He went further, confirming fans should expect movement soon.
“We expect to have movements in the next few weeks, obviously, because we want to get better like anybody else.”
It wasn’t just talk. According to L’Equipe, Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle with Newcastle United for Bruno Guimaraes. The deal is reportedly worth €90 million plus performance-related bonuses.
Arsenal had two earlier bids rejected — first at €70 million, then €80 million. Newcastle finally accepted the third offer. The 28-year-old Brazilian has already agreed personal terms on a contract running until 2031.
That’s not all. Sky Sports reports that Arsenal are also exploring a deal for Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr, who’s entering the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu. No club-to-club contact has been made yet, but the interest is described as real.
Arteta’s message was unmistakable: “We won’t sit still. And we are very ambitious in what we want to do.”
Tzolis Makes His Mark in Girona Rout
The 4-1 demolition of Girona gave Arsenal fans their first proper look at Christos Tzolis, and the Greek winger didn’t disappoint.
Signed from Club Brugge for £34 million — a Belgian Pro League record — Tzolis slotted a deflected finish into the bottom corner to double Arsenal’s lead in the first half. Here’s how the goals broke down:
- Kai Havertz opened the scoring after a brilliant through ball from 16-year-old Max Dowman
- Tzolis added the second with a sharp angled finish
- Dowman blasted in a powerful effort from outside the box after half-time
- Gabriel Jesus rounded things off following a defensive mix-up
Arteta was full of praise for his new forward.
“I’m very pleased with him. First of all, the way he has adapted to the club, to the team.”
He also drew comparisons with Leandro Trossard, whom Tzolis has been brought in to replace following his £17 million move to Besiktas.
“He has a lot of similarities with Leo in a lot of the things that he can do and the spaces he can occupy.”
Tzolis arrived with serious credentials. He racked up 43 goals and 45 assists in 108 appearances at Club Brugge, winning back-to-back Belgian Pro League Player of the Season awards. Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta called him “an extremely versatile attacking player” who is “comfortable across the front line.”
Youth Stars and a Bigger Picture
Beyond the transfer noise, the Girona win highlighted Arsenal’s depth. Dowman, just 16, was arguably the standout performer with a goal and an assist.
Several first-team regulars were still missing. Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and David Raya hadn’t returned from World Cup duty. William Saliba and Jurrien Timber remained sidelined through injury.
Yet Arsenal still looked sharp, controlled, and hungry. That’s a promising sign heading into a defining summer.
If the Bruno Guimaraes deal gets over the line — and the Vinicius Jr pursuit gains traction — Arsenal could enter the 2026-27 season with one of the strongest squads in European football. Add Tzolis already settling in, and the Premier League champions aren’t just defending their crown. They’re building something bigger.
