West Ham United have entered the picture for Arsenal’s out-of-favour Portuguese midfielder, according to Now Arsenal. The relegated Hammers are exploring a loan deal as they prepare for Championship football. But there’s a catch — Vieira doesn’t want to drop down a division. He wants Hamburg.
So why are West Ham even trying?
A Midfielder Reborn in Germany
Let’s rewind. Vieira hasn’t featured in Mikel Arteta’s plans for two seasons now. After a forgettable loan back at Porto in 2024/25, he was shipped to Hamburg last summer. That move changed everything.
In the Bundesliga, Vieira looked like the player Arsenal thought they were buying for €35 million back in 2022. He finished as Hamburg’s top scorer with seven goals and chipped in six assists across 31 appearances. His 1.3 key passes per game would’ve topped West Ham’s squad last season.
Hamburg, newly promoted, survived comfortably in 13th place. Vieira was central to that.
Now both player and club want to make the arrangement permanent. The problem? Money. Hamburg’s offer sits around €10 million. Arsenal believe he’s worth at least €20 million. According to Daily Cannon, Hamburg’s head of sport Kathleen Krüger has been blunt about the gap, saying the price being quoted isn’t realistic for her club.
That stalemate has opened the door for others.
Why West Ham Are Circling
West Ham’s relegation was confirmed in May, ending a 14-year run in the top flight. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo stayed on, committed to leading the club straight back up. He’s done it before — winning the Championship title with Wolves in 2017/18 with 99 points.
But Nuno needs creativity. West Ham’s midfield looked toothless during pre-season, drawing a blank against Rangers. Vieira’s profile fits what the Hammers lack:

- A proven creator who’s shown he can carry a team’s attacking output
There’s also the Jorge Mendes connection. Vieira is represented by Gestifute, the agency founded by Mendes — who also happens to be one of football’s most well-connected agents. Mendes brokered Nuno’s very first career move back in 1996. Their relationship runs decades deep.
According to Football Insider, West Ham considered signing Vieira last summer but ultimately pulled back. That interest has resurfaced now, with the Hammers viewing him as someone who could unlock defences in the second tier.
The Vieira Problem
Here’s the reality West Ham face. Vieira prefers Germany. Lately, he’s been training with Arsenal squad while waiting for the deal to get done. CaughtOffside reports that the midfielder is actively hoping Arsenal and Hamburg reach an agreement.
Playing in the Championship doesn’t hold the same appeal. Not for a 26-year-old with a point to prove who missed out on Portugal’s World Cup squad.
Arsenal, though, aren’t in a rush. They’re happy to let the window play out. With just one year left on Vieira’s contract, they know their leverage shrinks by the day — but they also believe a Premier League or top-European club might eventually meet their asking price.
West Ham’s best chance likely hinges on Hamburg’s talks collapsing entirely. If that happens, a loan could be a sensible compromise. Arsenal get the wages off the books. Vieira stays match-fit. And West Ham get the creative spark they’re missing.
