Arsenal’s summer just got a whole lot more complicated. William Saliba, the defender many consider the best in the Premier League, is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a back injury during France’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain.
The club confirmed the news this week. No surgery is needed, but Saliba won’t be available for a while. And with the 2026-27 Premier League season kicking off on August 21, that’s a problem Mikel Arteta can’t ignore.
So what’s the plan? According to Sky Sports, Arsenal are chasing two England internationals: free agent John Stones and Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa.
Saliba’s Absence Leaves a Gaping Hole
France manager Didier Deschamps revealed that Saliba had been playing through pain since March. That makes his six starts and four clean sheets at the tournament all the more impressive — but it also explains why things finally gave way.
Arsenal’s official statement confirmed that specialist reviews ruled out surgery. Instead, Saliba will follow a managed recovery programme. Some reports suggest a timeline of three to four months. No firm return date has been set.
For a club defending the Premier League title and competing in the Champions League, losing their best centre-back before pre-season even starts is a serious blow. Arteta isn’t the type to sit around hoping for the best.
Stones and Konsa: Two Very Different Options
Here’s where things get interesting. Both targets offer something specific, and both featured for England at the World Cup.
John Stones is a free agent after his Manchester City contract expired in June. He’s 32, he’s won 17 major trophies under Pep Guardiola — including six Premier League titles and the Champions League — and he already knows Arteta from their time together at the Etihad.
The appeal? No transfer fee. The catch? Stones was on around £250,000 per week at City and will likely want a significant signing-on fee. Chelsea are also reportedly circling.
Ezri Konsa is a different profile entirely. He’s 28, has two years left on his deal at Aston Villa, and has been one of the most consistent defenders in the league for years. He played every minute for England at the World Cup bar one match and even scored in the third-place playoff win over France.
But there’s a massive valuation gap holding things up:
- Arsenal value Konsa at around £30-35 million
- Aston Villa are reportedly asking for £60 million
- Villa have already sold Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for £117 million and feel no pressure to sell cheap
- Konsa is said to welcome a move to Arsenal, though he understands Villa’s stance
That’s a tricky negotiation, especially for a club that doesn’t want to overpay.
Can Arsenal’s Current Squad Cover the Gap?
It’s a fair question. On paper, the Gunners still have defensive depth. They’ve already signed Piero Hincapie permanently from Bayer Leverkusen for £45 million after his impressive loan spell. Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori, and Cristhian Mosquera are all available.
But look a little closer and the picture isn’t as comfortable.

The answer, based on his track record, is no. He won’t. Signing at least one more centre-back feels like a matter of when, not if. Whether it’s Stones on a free or Konsa for a premium, the priority is clear: Arsenal need proven quality who can step in from day one.
The Premier League title isn’t going to defend itself. And without Saliba, Arteta knows he needs reinforcements before that Coventry City opener on August 21.
