It’s the transfer standoff that won’t quit. Hamburg have slapped an opening bid of around €11 million on the table for Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira. And Arsenal? They’ve barely glanced at it.

Hamburg’s Love Affair With Vieira
You don’t often hear a club executive use the word “love” in transfer negotiations. Yet that’s exactly what happened when Hamburg board member Eric Huwer addressed fans at the club’s pre-season camp in Austria.
“We’ve fallen a little bit in love with Fabio,” Huwer told Kicker. “We’re fighting for him every day.”
It’s easy to see why. Vieira arrived at Hamburg on deadline day last September and quickly became their most influential attacking player. He finished the 2025/26 campaign with seven goals and six assists in 31 appearances across all competitions, playing a central role as Hamburg comfortably retained their Bundesliga status after promotion.
The original loan agreement included a purchase option worth around €20–22 million. Hamburg let that clause expire. They simply couldn’t afford it.
Now they’re trying to negotiate a deal closer to half that amount. Reports from FootballTransfers and Arseblog suggest Hamburg’s budget for Vieira sits around the €10 million mark. Arsenal, predictably, aren’t interested at that level.
Why Arsenal Won’t Budge
From Arsenal’s perspective, the maths doesn’t add up. They signed Vieira from Porto for €35 million back in 2022. Even at their reported €20 million asking price, they’re already staring at a significant loss.
Accepting €11 million? That would mean writing off roughly €24 million on a player who still has a year left on his contract. Arteta’s side have shown no willingness to do that.
There’s also broader context here. Vieira has reportedly already agreed personal terms with Hamburg on a long-term contract, according to BILD. The player wants to go back. But Arsenal hold the cards — and they know it.
Huwer acknowledged the impasse during his fan address:
“We’ve given Arsenal the numbers. They’re just not budging yet.”
He also made clear Hamburg won’t overstretch financially: “We’re confident we can make Fabio a competitive offer within our means, without taking on any debt.”
That’s a commendable stance for a newly promoted club. But it doesn’t solve the problem.
Could a Third Club Break the Deadlock?
Here’s where things get interesting. Hamburg aren’t the only club who’ve shown interest.
Back in June, journalist Dominik Schneider reported that Nottingham Forest submitted a €28 million bid for Vieira. If true, that figure would be much closer to what Arsenal want. However, Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reported the claim had been denied by all parties involved. The situation remains murky.
Stuttgart were also linked with Vieira earlier in the window, and his agent has reportedly been offering the midfielder to other Bundesliga clubs.
For now, Vieira is back at London Colney training with the Arsenal squad. He hasn’t played a competitive match for the Gunners since the 2023/24 season, and there’s no indication Arteta plans to reintegrate him.
