And honestly, can you blame him?
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Wilshere laid out why landing Vinicius would mean so much more than just adding a world-class winger.
“It would definitely be a statement from Mikel and from the club that they won the league last year and they’re not resting on that,” Wilshere said. “They want to go again, they want to improve — of course on the pitch, but obviously the commercial side as well with signing someone like that.”
That word — statement — keeps coming up. And it’s the right one.
Arsenal aren’t standing still after ending their 22-year wait
Let’s rewind briefly. Arsenal ended a 22-year Premier League title drought last season, finishing with 82 points and clinching it with a game to spare. David Raya won his third consecutive Golden Glove. They reached the Champions League final too, only losing to PSG on penalties.
That’s a special season by any measure. Most clubs would take a breath after a campaign like that. Arsenal aren’t most clubs right now.
They’ve already moved to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle in a deal reportedly worth around £80 million. But it’s the Vinicius pursuit that has everyone talking.

Still, there’s a significant obstacle. Vinicius himself has consistently said he wants to stay at Madrid. He told CazéTV after the season ended: “I’ve never imagined myself away from Real Madrid.”

Since the 2021-22 season, Vinicius has contributed to 106 La Liga goals — the most of any player in the competition over that span. He scored in two Champions League finals. Last season alone, he delivered 22 goals and 14 assists.
Wilshere clearly sees the bigger picture too. He talked about the opportunity Arsenal have right now.
“There’s probably an opportunity for Arsenal to go and do that and win the league next year, try and build on that, and then maybe the Champions League,” he said.
He’s right. Arsenal are in a rare position. They’ve got the title, the financial muscle, and a manager willing to pick up the phone himself.
