This transfer saga has dominated the summer window. And now, after weeks of back-and-forth, Arsenal and Newcastle have finally reached an agreement in principle over the transfer of Bruno Guimaraes for a reported £77 million.
The news, first broken by French outlet L’Equipe and credited to journalist Hugo Guillemet, confirms that the Premier League champions have secured the Brazilian midfielder on a five-year contract running until 2031. A few bonus-related details still need sorting, but the heavy lifting? That’s done.
So how did we get here? And what does this mean for both clubs heading into 2026/27?
Why Arsenal Wanted Guimaraes So Badly
Mikel Arteta didn’t hide his intentions. A central midfielder who could compete with Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi was always on the summer shopping list. Arsenal explored other options earlier in the window, but Guimaraes quickly became the priority.
It’s not hard to see why. The 28-year-old was Newcastle’s Player of the Year for 2025/26. He finished the campaign as the Magpies’ top scorer with nine Premier League goals and added eight assists across all competitions. That’s elite output for a midfielder.
He’s also a leader. Guimaraes captained Newcastle for the past two seasons and racked up 195 appearances since joining from Lyon in January 2022. His technical quality, defensive work rate, and experience make him one of the most complete midfielders in England right now.
Arsenal had agreed personal terms with Guimaraes as early as July 9, according to talkSPORT reporter Ben Jacobs. The sticking point was always the fee. Newcastle initially wanted £85 million, while the Gunners started with bids of around €70 million and €80 million.
The final compromise landed at €90 million — roughly £77 million — excluding bonuses and agent fees.
Newcastle’s Summer of Upheaval
This deal doesn’t happen in isolation. Newcastle are going through a turbulent period, to put it mildly.
Eddie Howe resigned as head coach on July 30, just 25 days before the season opener against Liverpool. He’d been at the club since November 2021, led them to a Carabao Cup triumph in 2025, and twice secured Champions League qualification. But frustration over the club’s transfer strategy wore him down.
Before his departure, Howe was reportedly resigned to losing Guimaraes. The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards wrote that Howe believed the midfielder would be sold, calling it “the final straw.”
Newcastle had already lost key players this summer:
- Anthony Gordon joined Barcelona for £70 million
- Sandro Tonali moved to Tottenham for approximately £100 million
Losing their captain on top of all that? It’s a brutal window for the Magpies. They’ve brought in Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur, and Aladji Bamba, but replacing the core of last season’s squad won’t be easy. Matthias Jaissle, currently at Al-Ahli, is expected to take over from Howe.
What Guimaraes Brings to the Emirates
If the deal goes through — and everything suggests it will — Guimaraes slots into an Arsenal midfield that already boasts Rice and Martin Odegaard. That’s a serious trio.
He’s 28, in his prime, and hungry for silverware. Reports have consistently stated that Guimaraes views this as a career-defining move. He wants to compete for titles and play Champions League football regularly. Arsenal can offer both.
It’s worth noting that Lyon, his former club, will also benefit. L’Equipe reported that a sell-on clause will net the French side more than €8 million from the deal.
Arsenal have already made three signings this summer — Piero Hincapie on a permanent deal from Bayer Leverkusen, Illan Meslier on a free from Leeds, and Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34 million. Adding Guimaraes would represent their marquee piece of business.
A medical and final paperwork are still required. But barring any late complications, Bruno Guimaraes looks set to become an Arsenal player. For the Gunners faithful, the wait is almost over.
