One Phone Call Changed Everything: Why Morgan Rogers Picked Chelsea Over Arsenal

Chelsea hijack Arsenal's move for Morgan Rogers in a record £117m deal. How Xabi Alonso's phone call changed everything this summer.

Morgan Rogers to Chelsea: How Xabi Alonso Hijacked Arsenal's Top Target

Arsenal thought they had their man. Weeks of talks, personal terms practically sorted, and a summer-long pursuit that made Morgan Rogers feel like a done deal. Then Chelsea made one phone call — and the whole thing fell apart.

On Saturday evening, David Ornstein dropped the bombshell. Chelsea had reached a verbal agreement with Aston Villa worth £117m for the 23-year-old. It’s now a new British transfer record, surpassing the £116m Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson just weeks earlier.

So what went wrong for Arsenal? And why did Rogers choose Stamford Bridge over the Emirates?

The Alonso Factor

It really comes down to one man: Xabi Alonso.

Chelsea’s new head coach didn’t just approve the deal. He drove it. According to The Athletic, Alonso personally called Rogers to outline his vision for the player’s role. That conversation proved decisive.

Rogers was promised regular starts on the left wing, playing alongside Cole Palmer. It’s a position Chelsea desperately needed to fill after underwhelming seasons from Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens.

Ben Jacobs reported that Chelsea’s co-owner Behdad Eghbali also played a key part in sealing the agreement. But it was Alonso’s pitch — his credibility, his track record at Bayer Leverkusen — that tipped the scales.

Arsenal had Mikel Arteta. Chelsea had the man who went unbeaten in the Bundesliga. For Rogers, the choice became clear.

Arsenal’s Hesitation Cost Them

Here’s where it gets painful for Gunners fans.

Arsenal weren’t slow out of interest. They were slow out of caution. According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal valued Rogers at around £90-100m. Villa wanted north of £100m. The two sides couldn’t bridge that gap.

Arsenal’s plan was to formally bid after the World Cup wrapped up. They were reportedly days away from submitting an offer. But Chelsea didn’t wait.

Romano explained on his YouTube channel that Chelsea entered negotiations aggressively. They didn’t come to haggle — they came to close. A direct meeting with Villa on Saturday produced an agreement within hours.

Meanwhile, Arsenal had spent that same week finalising a £34m deal for Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis. Was it a backup plan? Leverage? Or did they sense the Rogers deal slipping? The timing raised questions.

Either way, the result is the same. Chelsea moved first and moved decisively.

What Chelsea Are Getting

Rogers isn’t just expensive. He’s worth the hype.

Since joining Villa from Middlesbrough for roughly £7m in early 2024, his rise has been remarkable:

  • 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 appearances for Aston Villa
  • PFA Young Player of the Year in 2025
  • A Champions League hat-trick against Celtic at just 22
  • Europa League winner with Villa in 2025-26
  • A regular in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad at the 2026 World Cup

This past Premier League season alone, he registered 10 goals and 6 assists across 37 starts. His versatility — comfortable as a number 10, left winger, or right-sided attacker — makes him exactly the profile Alonso wants.

Chelsea aren’t just buying a player. They’re buying a cornerstone of whatever Alonso builds next.

And for Arsenal? It’s back to the drawing board. Links to Julian Alvarez, Bradley Barcola, and Eli Junior Kroupi have surfaced. But none of them were Plan A.

Rogers was the player Arsenal wanted most this summer. Chelsea simply wanted him more — and weren’t afraid to pay for it. That £117m fee is staggering, sure. But in today’s market, hesitation costs more than overspending ever will.
