David Ornstein of The Athletic reported that Guimarães has formally told Newcastle he wants to leave and join Arsenal. That’s a significant shift. Before the 2026 World Cup, the Brazilian kept things professional. Now? He’s made his feelings clear.
Romano added that Arsenal are preparing another official bid, and that a fee somewhere between £65 million and £90 million could get talks moving. Mikel Arteta is said to be personally driving the pursuit. He wants this signing badly.
Here’s the key detail: Guimarães won’t go on strike. Unlike Alexander Isak, who forced a £125 million move to Liverpool last summer by refusing to play, the Brazilian has told Newcastle he won’t cause problems. He’ll leave it in the club’s hands.
That’s classy. But it also puts pressure on Newcastle to negotiate rather than dig in.

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness believes a deal is close. Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness said Guimarães holds all the cards right now.
He suggested £90 million as a middle ground where both clubs could agree. And crucially, he expects the player to push the deal through.
Wyness also noted that Newcastle can “see the writing on the wall.” They’ve already banked around £170 million from Gordon and Tonali’s exits. They’ve signed replacements like Sean Steur from Ajax and are reportedly closing in on Johan Manzambi from Freiburg.
The infrastructure for a Guimarães sale is being built, even if Newcastle won’t publicly admit it.
So where does this leave things? Arsenal are willing to go up to around £80 million. Newcastle want £100 million. The player wants the move. Romano says the “magic number” is £90 million. It feels like we’re heading toward a compromise.
