England’s World Cup dream hangs in the balance. And so does the fitness of their most important midfielder.
Declan Rice, Arsenal’s Player of the Season and the engine of Thomas Tuchel’s midfield, is racing to recover from a sickness bug ahead of Wednesday’s blockbuster semi-final against Argentina in Atlanta.
The 27-year-old spent three days confined to bed after falling ill in Mexico following England’s dramatic last-16 victory over the hosts. He gutted it out to start the quarter-final against Norway in Miami but lasted only 45 minutes before being replaced by Arsenal teammate Eberechi Eze.
England won 2-1 after extra time, thanks to a Jude Bellingham brace. But the image of Rice trudging off at half-time sent a chill through fans on both sides of north London and the English Channel.
What Tuchel Said About Rice’s Condition
Tuchel didn’t sugarcoat things after the Norway win.
“Knowing that Declan struggled after the last three days, he was most of the time in bed, I knew he could not survive the 90 minutes,” Tuchel told reporters. “I also knew there was the possibility of 120, so I didn’t want to waste another change.”
The decision was partly tactical — Tuchel wanted to push more attacking players forward while trailing 1-0 — but Rice’s physical state clearly forced the issue. He’d missed two training sessions leading up to the match and looked uncomfortable in the Florida heat.
What makes things more complicated is Rice has also been carrying a neural issue affecting his lower back and hamstring for several months. It hasn’t kept him out of any matches, but it’s been a constant background concern throughout the tournament.
Despite all of that, reports from the England camp suggest his condition has improved significantly over the past 48 hours. There’s growing optimism that he’ll be fit enough to start against the reigning world champions.
And if you know Rice, you know he’ll do everything in his power to be on that pitch. A World Cup final is at stake. You don’t sit that out if you can stand.
Why This Matters So Much for Arsenal and England
It’s hard to overstate how central Rice is to both club and country.
At Arsenal, he just wrapped up arguably the finest season of his career. He was named Player of the Season for the second year running — joining legends like Thierry Henry and Ian Wright in winning the award back-to-back. In 36 Premier League appearances, he contributed four goals, five assists, 70 tackles and over 2,100 completed passes as Arsenal won their first league title in 22 years.
For England, he’s started five of their six World Cup matches. The only one he missed was the group-stage win over Panama due to an injury flare-up. His leadership, defensive discipline and ability to control the tempo have been pillars of Tuchel’s setup throughout the tournament.
Losing him against Argentina would be a serious blow. Here’s what he brings:
- Defensive stability and midfield protection in front of the back four
- Ball progression under pressure, something few midfielders in the world do better
- Set-piece delivery, a weapon Arsenal have sharpened into one of Europe’s deadliest threats
- Experience and composure, with 78 caps and counting
Without Rice, England’s midfield balance shifts dramatically. That’s not a risk you want to take against Lionel Messi.
A Rivalry Renewed in Atlanta
This semi-final carries enormous weight. England haven’t reached a World Cup final since 1966. Argentina are the defending champions, with Messi reportedly playing in his final World Cup. The two nations haven’t met at the tournament since 2002, and before that, there was Maradona’s “Hand of God” in ’86 and Beckham’s red card in ’98.
Wednesday’s match kicks off at 8pm BST in Atlanta. For Arsenal fans, the concern is simple — they need Rice fit and firing, not just for England but for the long run. A player who’s battled illness, a nerve issue and the gruelling intensity of a World Cup knockout stage will need careful management heading into next season.
Tuchel has promised to reduce training intensity ahead of the semi-final to give Rice and the squad the best chance of recovery. For now, the Arsenal man is expected to declare himself available.
Whether that’s the wise call or a brave one remains to be seen. But don’t bet against Declan Rice when there’s a World Cup final on the line.
