Arsenal Women have pulled off one of the summer’s most impressive transfer coups. The Gunners confirmed the signing of 19-year-old winger Lisa Baum from RB Leipzig on July 14, beating off stiff competition from Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Lyon and Manchester United.
The deal is reportedly worth €600,000 in total, making it the highest fee ever paid for a player leaving the Frauen-Bundesliga. It’s a bold statement from a club in the middle of a serious squad overhaul.
So who exactly is Lisa Baum? And why were Europe’s biggest clubs fighting over a teenager with zero senior international caps?
From Dar es Salaam to North London
Baum’s story doesn’t start in Germany. She was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and moved to Germany at the age of four. Her football journey began at Hamburger SV’s academy in 2021, where she signed a professional contract the following year at just 16.
What she did at Hamburg was remarkable. Over 68 appearances, she registered 21 assists and helped the club climb from the third division to the Bundesliga in just three seasons. That’s two promotions in three years. Not many teenagers can say they’ve been central to that kind of rise.
RB Leipzig came calling in 2025, and Baum stepped up again. In her only season in the German top flight, she made 26 appearances, scored six goals and added three assists. She started 25 of 26 league games. At 19, she looked completely at home.
Her Leipzig coach Jonas Stephan didn’t hold back when assessing her ceiling: “If she continues like this, Lisa will become a world-class player, one of the best in her position.”
Why Arsenal Won the Race
When reports emerged that Baum could be on the move, half of Europe circled. Barcelona, the reigning European champions, were keen. So were Lyon, Bayern Munich, Manchester United and London City Lionesses.
But Arsenal moved decisively. According to Arseblog News, the Gunners had been tracking Baum since June, and the deal is structured as a three-year contract with an option for a further year.
What swung it? A few things stand out:
- Arsenal could offer Champions League football and one of the strongest women’s leagues in the world
- The club has invested heavily in a long-term project under head coach Renee Slegers
- Baum fills a clear need after the departure of Beth Mead to Manchester City
“I’m so happy to join Arsenal and I can’t wait to get started,” Baum said upon signing. “This league is so competitive and Arsenal is a big club, so I’m excited to challenge myself and compete with the best.”
Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley described Baum as “one of the most highly rated young wingers in Europe.”
A left-footed winger who typically plays on the right, Baum is known for her pace, directness and willingness to take on defenders in one-on-one situations. She can also operate at full-back, giving Slegers tactical flexibility.
Part of a Bigger Picture
Baum isn’t arriving in isolation. She’s Arsenal’s fifth signing of the summer and the fourth recruited from a Bundesliga club. Georgia Stanway arrived from Bayern Munich. Selina Cerci joined from Hoffenheim. Geraldine Reuteler came from Eintracht Frankfurt. Ona Batlle signed from Barcelona.
It’s a clear strategy. Arsenal have waved goodbye to veterans like Beth Mead, Katie McCabe and Manuela Zinsberger, and replaced them with younger, hungry talent. The average age of the squad is dropping fast.
The Gunners haven’t just refreshed their roster. They’ve reshaped it. More depth, more versatility, more competition for places. That’s exactly what Slegers needs if Arsenal are going to mount a serious title challenge in 2026/27.
Baum herself seems to understand what’s at stake. In an interview with Die Welt earlier this year, she offered a glimpse of her mindset: “My goal isn’t to be a star, I mainly want to be happy with what I do.”
She’ll wear the number 19 shirt, previously held by Caitlin Foord. And at 19 years old, with the hunger she’s shown at every level so far, don’t be surprised if Lisa Baum becomes one of the stories of the upcoming WSL season.
