The Premier League champions aren’t resting on their laurels. Arsenal have agreed a £34 million deal with Club Brugge for Greek winger Christos Tzolis, and this one feels like more than just a squad refresh.
It’s a record fee for the Belgian Pro League. It’s a direct replacement for Leandro Trossard. And it’s proof that Mikel Arteta knows exactly where his team needs strengthening.
So who is Tzolis, and why should Arsenal fans be excited?
From Norwich Flop to Belgium’s Best Player
Here’s the thing about Tzolis — he’s been in the Premier League before. And it didn’t go well.
Norwich City broke their transfer record to sign him from PAOK for £8.8m back in 2021. He was just 19. But despite a stunning debut — two goals and two assists in a 6-0 League Cup win over Bournemouth — he barely saw the pitch after that.
He played fewer than 800 minutes all season. Norwich got relegated. Tzolis got forgotten.
He’s spoken about it since with surprising humour. He told Goal that he still laughs when he looks back at his playing time that year. Even with five games left and Norwich already mathematically down, he didn’t get a single minute.
But here’s the redemption arc.
After loan spells at Twente and Fortuna Dusseldorf, Tzolis landed at Club Brugge in July 2024 for just €6.5m. And he’s been sensational since.
In the 2025/26 season alone, he racked up 17 goals and 23 assists in 36 Belgian Pro League appearances. Across all competitions, he contributed to 51 goals — a jaw-dropping return that earned him the Pro League Player of the Season award.
At 24, he’s entering his prime. And this time, he’s ready for England.
Why Arsenal Moved Now
Arsenal’s need for a left winger has been an open secret all summer. The Gunners sold Trossard to Besiktas for £17m earlier this week, ending a three-and-a-half-year spell that included 174 appearances, 36 goals, and a title-winning contribution.
With Trossard gone and Gabriel Martinelli’s contract expiring in 2027, Arteta had to act.
The initial targets were bigger names:
- Kenan Yildiz at Juventus — but Juve made it clear he wasn’t for sale
- Morgan Rogers at Aston Villa — but Villa quoted a fee north of £130m
- Bradley Barcola at PSG — another pricey option with complications
Arsenal pivoted. The Athletic first reported their interest in Tzolis back on June 12, suggesting a deal could be done for around €40m. And now, just over a month later, it’s wrapped up.
Sky Sports reports that once Tzolis heard the Premier League champions were interested, he wanted nobody else.
That matters. Desire matters.
What Tzolis Brings to Arteta’s Arsenal
The comparisons with Trossard are obvious and deliberate. Both are Belgian-league-proven left wingers with an eye for goal and an ability to create for others. Both thrive in tight spaces. Both carry a competitive edge — Arteta once called Trossard “a bit of a moaner” in training, and Tzolis’s former coach has flagged his “emotional stability” as a work-in-progress.
But Tzolis brings something extra. His 40 goal involvements in the league this season represent an output that Trossard never quite reached in Belgium.
A few numbers that stand out:
- 3.4 shots per game
- 1.17 goal involvements per 90 minutes
- 83% of appearances with at least one shot on target
- An average match rating of 7.9
He’s also played Champions League football with Brugge, facing Arsenal themselves last season. He knows what this level demands.
And at 24, there’s room to grow. The Greek international isn’t a short-term fix — he’s a long-term investment at a position Arsenal needed to future-proof.
With pre-season kicking off this week, the club wants the deal finalised quickly. This isn’t the end of Arsenal’s summer business either. The pursuit of Rogers or another marquee attacker continues separately.
But make no mistake — Christos Tzolis’s journey from Norwich reject to Arsenal’s newest signing is one of football’s great comeback stories. And this chapter is just getting started.
