Arsenal Confirm Antonio Gomez as New Head of Performance After Braga Tug-of-War

Arsenal Confirm Antonio Gomez as New Head of Performance for 2026-27

It’s official. Arsenal have landed Antonio Gomez as their new Head of Performance, and it wasn’t easy.

The Spanish fitness specialist has arrived from Portuguese side Braga, where both the club’s owners and coaching staff fought to keep him. According to Cadena SER, they only relented once they understood the scale of the opportunity Arsenal were offering.

Gomez was spotted at Arsenal’s pre-season training camp in Girona this week, working alongside the first-team squad. That visual confirmation put an end to weeks of speculation.

Who Is Antonio Gomez?

So why did Arsenal go to such lengths to get this man?

Gomez holds a PhD in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences. He’s spent over two decades working in elite football across some of the biggest clubs and organisations on the planet. His CV reads like a tour of European football’s top table:

  • FC Barcelona (first team and B team)
  • Liverpool FC
  • Sunderland AFC
  • CR Flamengo (Brazil)
  • The Spanish national team (senior and youth levels)
  • The Polish national team
  • SC Braga

At Braga, he served as Head of Performance and conditioning coach under Carlos Vicens. His colleagues there considered him a reliable and meticulous professional. One former Barcelona co-worker described him as someone always ready to learn, always with a notebook in hand.

Gomez himself confirmed the move with a statement on Instagram. He wrote that he approaches this challenge with humility and a desire to learn every day. He also expressed his excitement about joining one of the most important clubs in world football.

Why Arsenal Needed This Overhaul

Here’s the context that makes this appointment so significant.

Arsenal played 63 matches last season — the most of any side across Europe’s top five leagues. That gruelling schedule took a heavy toll. Key players like Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Jurrien Timber, Mikel Merino, and Kai Havertz all missed considerable stretches through injury.

The club responded decisively. Shortly after the Champions League final, Arsenal dismissed long-serving head doctor Zafar Iqbal. The Telegraph reported that the decision shocked internal staff. Spanish physiotherapist Joaquin Acedo had been brought in earlier to audit the club’s injury record, and his findings clearly influenced what came next.

Iqbal later addressed his exit, stating the time was right for both sides to move in a new direction.

Gomez isn’t the only new face, either. Arsenal’s medical department has seen a full-scale rebuild this summer:

  • Arnaldo Abrantes joined from Aston Villa as head of medicine and performance
  • Eneko Angulo arrived from Real Betis as head of rehabilitation
  • Additional fitness coaches from Villa have also made the switch

It’s a coordinated effort. And Gomez sits right at the centre of it.

What This Means for Arsenal’s Title Defence

Can a fitness coach really make a difference to a title race? Absolutely.

Modern football isn’t just about tactics and transfers. Player availability wins leagues. Arsenal learned that the hard way during seasons where injuries derailed promising campaigns. Mikel Arteta knows it too.

The manager recently told Arsenal’s official website that excellence has to be the standard going forward. He wants more determination and ambition from everyone at the club, not just the players on the pitch.

Gomez’s broad experience across different leagues, cultures, and footballing philosophies gives Arsenal something they haven’t had before. He’s worked in the Premier League, La Liga, the Primeira Liga, and South American football. That range of exposure should help him tailor conditioning programmes for a squad packed with international talent.

With several Arsenal players still fresh off the 2026 World Cup, careful individual return-to-fitness plans will be critical. Getting that right could be the difference between a smooth start and another season plagued by early setbacks.

Arsenal fans should feel encouraged. This isn’t a flashy signing that grabs front-page headlines, but it might just be one of the smartest moves the club makes all summer.
