Could the Gunners’ left-back headache finally have a solution landing in their lap?
Maxi Araujo’s representatives have reportedly offered the Sporting CP defender to Arsenal as the summer transfer window heats up. According to GiveMeSport, intermediaries have been reaching out to let clubs know the Uruguay international is available at the right price.
It’s the kind of opportunity that doesn’t come around every day. And for a club that’s dealt with Riccardo Calafiori’s recurring fitness issues all season, it could be worth a serious look.
Who Is Maxi Araujo?
The 26-year-old Uruguayan has built a reputation as one of the most versatile left-sided players in Portuguese football. He operates as a left-back for Sporting but regularly plays as a winger for Uruguay under Marcelo Bielsa.
His numbers speak for themselves. In the 2025/26 Liga Portugal season, Araujo posted five goals and four assists. Across all competitions at Sporting, he’s now racked up 11 goals in 93 appearances since joining from Mexican side Toluca in August 2024 for around £11 million.
Then came the 2026 World Cup. Araujo scored in both of Uruguay’s opening group matches — a half-volley equaliser against Saudi Arabia and another crucial strike against Cabo Verde. He also added an assist. Two goals and one assist in two games? That’s the kind of form that gets agents picking up the phone.
According to Daily Cannon, his representatives have informed both Arsenal and Liverpool that Araujo is keen on a move to England. The Sun reported that the player is desperate for a Premier League switch.
But here’s the catch. Sporting don’t want to sell.
The Price Tag Problem
Reports suggest Sporting have already moved to protect their asset. The club has reportedly:
- Proposed extending Araujo’s contract by an additional year, running until 2030
- Offered to triple his salary to approximately €2 million net per season
- Inserted an €80 million release clause into his current deal
Transfermarkt currently values Araujo at €40 million. Sporting want at least £51.5 million to even consider letting him go. That’s a significant gap between perceived value and asking price.
CaughtOffside reported back in April that Arsenal had already established contact with Araujo’s camp after his impressive Champions League quarter-final displays against the Gunners. FootballTransfers noted that Chelsea and Tottenham had also shown interest.
So this isn’t a new name on Arsenal’s radar. But the question remains — are they willing to spend big?
Does Arsenal Actually Need Him?
This is where it gets interesting. Arsenal’s left-back situation has been complicated all season. Calafiori was forced off injured against West Ham and missed further time with a hip problem. He’s been sidelined multiple times since arriving from Bologna in 2024.
Myles Lewis-Skelly has filled in admirably. But ReadArsenal pointed out that Araujo’s profile becomes especially attractive if Lewis-Skelly eventually transitions into midfield — a move many believe suits his natural skillset.
Araujo’s ability to play both left-back and left-wing gives Mikel Arteta tactical flexibility. That kind of dual threat is exactly what the modern Premier League demands.
Still, the JustArsenal report highlighted that Arsenal haven’t actively pursued a deal yet. Squad departures may need to happen first. And right now, nobody at the Emirates seems in a rush to leave.
Don’t be surprised if this one drags on. Araujo’s talent isn’t in question. His World Cup performances put that debate to rest. The real battle is between Sporting’s desire to keep him and his agents’ push for a bigger stage.
If Arsenal can negotiate below that €80 million clause — and the reports suggest Sporting might accept less — this could be one of the smarter signings of the window. A proven defender with attacking flair, international pedigree, and years of his peak still ahead.
