Just weeks after ending their 22-year wait for a Premier League title, the Gunners are already planning how to keep the trophy at the Emirates. And the centrepiece of that plan? Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers.
According to transfer expert Ben Jacobs, negotiations between Arsenal and Villa for the 23-year-old attacker are expected to accelerate once the 2026 World Cup wraps up this Sunday. A formal bid is reportedly imminent — though it won’t come cheap.
Villa want north of £100m. Some reports put the asking price as high as £130m, which would smash the British transfer record. So, is Rogers really worth that kind of money?
Why Arsenal Want Rogers So Badly
The short answer: they need goals from more places.
Rogers delivered 10 goals and 6 assists across 37 Premier League appearances for Villa in 2025-26, according to FBref. Those are strong numbers for an attacking midfielder who’s still developing. But it’s the way he scores that excites Arsenal’s recruitment team.
He’s a threat from range. He’s dangerous on the counter. And crucially, he can create something from nothing — the kind of low-probability chances that win tight games.
That matters even more now because of what happened at the World Cup.
William Saliba suffered a serious back injury during France’s semi-final defeat to Spain. Reports from L’Equipe suggest he could face surgery and miss four to five months of the new season. Without their defensive anchor, Arsenal are going to concede more goals. That puts enormous pressure on the attack to compensate.
Bukayo Saka’s fitness is another concern. He’s been managing injury issues since late 2025 and struggled for consistent minutes with England at the tournament.
Rogers would add:
- A direct, ball-carrying presence from midfield
- Goals from outside the box and in transition
- Depth behind Saka on the right or as an alternative number 10
- A homegrown English player who knows the Premier League inside out
The Deal Is Closer Than You’d Think
Here’s what we know so far.
FootballTransfers reported that Arsenal are “very, very close” to agreeing personal terms with Rogers on a five-year contract. CaughtOffside’s sources went even further, claiming there’s already an agreement in principle on the player’s side.
Rogers reportedly wants the move. Arsenal want him. The only real obstacle? Convincing Villa to sell.
Villa paid just €9.4m for Rogers when he arrived from Middlesbrough in January 2024. He’s now their most valuable asset, contracted until 2031. They don’t need to sell, and they know it.
But there’s a sense that both clubs understand this deal is heading in one direction. The World Cup created a natural pause. Once it ends, expect things to move fast.
The Bigger Picture for Arsenal’s Summer
Rogers isn’t the only name on Arteta’s wishlist. Arsenal are also pushing hard for Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle, with reports suggesting a fee in the region of £80-90m could be needed. The Brazilian would address a different problem — providing creativity and service from deep midfield.
If Arsenal land both Rogers and Guimaraes, they’d be making a statement that goes beyond just defending the title. They’d be building a squad capable of winning the Champions League too — the one trophy that still eludes Arteta after reaching only their second-ever final last season.
It’s going to be an expensive summer in north London. But after waiting 22 years for a league title, Arsenal clearly aren’t in the mood to let it slip away again.
