The summer transfer window is heating up, and one name keeps popping up everywhere: Manu Kone. The Roma and France midfielder has become one of the most talked-about players in Europe after a standout 2026 World Cup campaign.
And now, Manchester United appear to have jumped ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign him.
According to L’Equipe, United have opened formal talks with Roma over a deal for the 25-year-old. Arsenal remain interested — they’ve been linked with Kone for months — but the Red Devils reportedly hold the advantage right now.
So, what’s driving this saga? And can United actually get it done?
Why United Need Kone More Than Ever
It’s been a chaotic summer at Old Trafford. United’s midfield rebuild hasn’t exactly gone to plan.
The club agreed a £35m deal for Atalanta’s Ederson back in June. Everything looked set. Then his medical flagged serious knee concerns, and United walked away. Atalanta’s sporting director admitted the club was “stunned” by the decision. Ederson has since signed a new five-year deal in Bergamo.
That left a gaping hole in United’s recruitment strategy. They’ve already brought in Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea for a combined £85m. But the plan was always to sign three central midfielders, especially with Casemiro gone and Manuel Ugarte out with a long-term injury.
Kone fits the profile perfectly. He’s press-resistant, physically imposing, and comfortable in a double pivot. Rio Ferdinand called him “France’s best midfielder” during the World Cup. That’s not faint praise.
Kone’s World Cup Changed Everything
Here’s where things get interesting. Kone wasn’t even a guaranteed starter when the tournament kicked off. But after Aurelien Tchouameni picked up a muscle injury, Kone stepped in — and didn’t look back.
He started against Iraq, Norway, Paraguay, and Morocco, delivering increasingly impressive performances. His display in the 2-0 quarter-final win over Morocco was particularly eye-catching. FIFA’s own coverage described him as “strong in the tackle, tireless across the turf, confident in possession.”
When France dropped him for the semi-final against Spain, they lost 2-0. Coincidence? Many fans didn’t think so.
Kone was visibly emotional after that defeat, and it became one of the lasting images of France’s tournament. Now, with the World Cup behind him, he’s ready to move on — literally.
Roma placed Kone on the transfer list back in May. Despite helping the club finish third in Serie A with 73 points and qualifying for the Champions League, they need the cash. He arrived from Borussia Monchengladbach for just €18m in 2024. Now Roma want somewhere between €55m and €60m.
That’s a healthy profit. But is it too rich for United?
The Obstacles Standing in United’s Way
There are a few complications here.
One Athletic correspondent recently admitted he has “a slight feeling” that even Roma’s reduced asking price might be too steep for United. Plans have shifted multiple times this window, and there’s a sense the club doesn’t want to overpay after the Ederson debacle.
Arsenal, meanwhile, aren’t out of the picture. Earlier this summer, Italian outlet Corriere della Sera reported the Gunners had already agreed personal terms with Kone’s camp. The player himself was said to prefer Arsenal at one point, drawn by the chance to play for the reigning Premier League champions.
And it’s not just a two-horse race. Chelsea, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, and at least two other unnamed Premier League clubs have all been linked with the Frenchman. Roma rejected a £33.8m bid from an unnamed club earlier this month, signaling they won’t accept lowball offers.
Still, the latest reports from L’Equipe suggest United are the frontrunners. Kone is reportedly open to a move to the north-west of England and views the Premier League as his preferred destination.
The question now isn’t whether Kone leaves Roma. It’s who writes the biggest check — and how quickly they do it. Because in a window slowed by the World Cup, patience might be just as important as spending power.
