Jurrien Timber Flies Home From Arsenal’s Spain Camp

Jurrien Timber Leaves Arsenal Pre-Season Camp for Groin Injury Check

Arsenal fans have had their nerves tested plenty when it comes to Jurrien Timber and injuries. So when news broke that the Dutch defender left the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain to return to London, it’s understandable that alarm bells started ringing.

But here’s the thing — this isn’t the crisis it might look like at first glance.

According to BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel, Timber travelled back to the club’s training base for a scheduled assessment of the groin injury that disrupted the final months of his 2025/26 season. Sources close to the situation insist there’s been no setback. The visit was already part of a recovery plan designed by Arsenal’s medical team.

He’s expected to rejoin the squad in Spain once the checks are complete.

A Frustrating Pattern That Won’t Go Away

If you’ve followed Timber’s Arsenal career, you know the story by now. Injury has been the unwelcome constant.

It started on the very first day. His competitive debut against Nottingham Forest in August 2023 ended with a torn ACL (his first major career-defining injury) that wiped out almost his entire first season. He didn’t return to first-team action until the following spring.

When he finally got going in 2025/26, he was excellent. Timber racked up 44 appearances across all competitions and cemented himself as Arteta’s first-choice right-back. He made 30 Premier League starts as the Gunners lifted the title.

But the groin problem hit hard in mid-March and refused to let go.

From that point, Timber missed:

  • The entire Premier League run-in
  • The League Cup final
  • The FA Cup quarter-final elimination
  • Five Champions League knockout matches

He did make it back just in time to feature in the Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. But the groin trouble returned soon after, ultimately ruling him out of the Netherlands’ 2026 World Cup campaign. Ronald Koeman’s squad went on to exit in the Round of 32, losing to Morocco on penalties.

Surgery, Rehab, and a Cautious Road Back

Reports from Daily Cannon confirmed that Timber underwent minor surgery on the groin issue over the summer. The timing of the Netherlands’ withdrawal announcement hinted that the decision was partly motivated by allowing him to get the procedure done before the new campaign.

Timber himself offered a brief update when Arsenal’s players returned to London Colney last week.

“Getting there slowly, trying hard,” he said. “I’ve been rehabbing during the summer, hopefully back soon!”

That’s encouraging, if a little vague. And it matches the cautious tone Arsenal have struck throughout. They aren’t rushing this one, and who can blame them? After the ACL disaster in his debut season, the club knows better than most what happens when you push a player back too quickly.

Sports Mole reported a positive sign earlier this week — Timber was pictured boarding the plane to Spain alongside Ben White, who’s also working his way back from a knee issue. Both were part of the travelling squad, even if they weren’t yet at full capacity.

What It Means for Arsenal’s Title Defence

Can Arsenal afford to start the season without him? Probably. But they’d rather not.

Timber’s versatility across the back line, his comfort on the ball, and his defensive reliability made him one of the most important players in last season’s title-winning squad. Losing him for any stretch would leave Arteta short of options at right-back, especially with White only just returning himself.

The good news is the timeline still looks manageable. Arsenal’s first pre-season friendly against Girona is on August 1, followed by fixtures against Real Betis, Borussia Dortmund, and Como. The Community Shield against Manchester City takes place on August 16, with the Premier League opener against Coventry City set for August 21.

That’s still over three weeks away. If the assessment goes smoothly and Timber rejoins the group without complications, there’s a realistic path to him featuring before competitive football begins.

For now, Arsenal supporters should take this one at face value. It’s a routine check, not an emergency. And after everything Timber’s been through, a cautious approach might be the smartest thing the club can do.
