Arsenal’s transfer window just got a whole lot more complicated.
Days after watching Chelsea snatch Morgan Rogers from under their noses in a British-record £117m deal, the Gunners now face another threat. Chelsea have launched a £64m bid for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, yet another player firmly on Arsenal’s radar.
It’s starting to feel like a pattern. And for Arsenal fans, it’s a frustrating one.
The Morgan Rogers Saga: How Chelsea Beat Arsenal to the Punch
Morgan Rogers was supposed to be Arsenal’s guy. According to The Athletic’s James McNicholas, the Aston Villa forward was Mikel Arteta’s number one target this summer. The Arsenal boss personally led a charm offensive, and the club carried out extensive background work on the deal.
But here’s where it fell apart. Arsenal were never willing to go beyond £80m for the 23-year-old. Villa wanted north of £116m. Chelsea? They simply walked in and offered £117m. No haggling, no lengthy negotiations.
Villa even gave Arsenal the chance to match Chelsea’s bid. They declined.
As Fabrizio Romano explained, Chelsea’s approach was decisive and immediate. They didn’t come to negotiate. They came to close. Rogers agreed to a six-year deal with an option for a seventh and completed his medical this week.
At his unveiling, Rogers praised Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso as a major factor in his decision. He also spoke about reuniting with Cole Palmer, a friend since their Manchester City academy days.
“We’ve been speaking about this for a while; we always would love to have played together. So, for it to happen, we’re both excited,” Rogers said.
Chelsea’s Next Move: The £64m Alex Scott Bid
If losing Rogers wasn’t enough, Chelsea are now coming for another Arsenal target.
According to talkSPORT and BBC Sport, Chelsea submitted a £64m bid for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott on July 21. Bournemouth rejected it immediately. The Cherries value Scott at around £80m, a gap of £16m that Chelsea will need to bridge if they’re serious.
Scott has rejected multiple new contract offers from Bournemouth. He’s got two years left on his current deal, and there’s a clear sense that he wants a bigger stage.
Arsenal had already seen an earlier enquiry for Scott knocked back by Bournemouth in June. Manchester United are also in the mix. It’s a three-way race at minimum.
Here’s what makes Bournemouth’s position strong:
- They qualified for the Europa League and are under no financial pressure to sell
- Scott is part of their pre-season squad and they expect him to stay
- They’ve already banked significant income from selling Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez, and others
Still, a player who doesn’t want to sign a new contract creates inevitable tension. The question is whether any club meets that £80m asking price before the window closes.
Where Does This Leave Arsenal?
Arsenal’s summer is at a crossroads. They’ve already completed a few signings, including last summer’s £52m capture of Noni Madueke from Chelsea and a deal for Christos Tzolis this window. But they still need a marquee attacking addition.
Several names have surfaced as Rogers alternatives:
- Bradley Barcola from PSG, a long-standing target
- Eli Junior Kroupi from Bournemouth, valued at up to £100m
- Marcus Rashford, who remains available after Barcelona declined to make his loan permanent
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Arsenal are actively considering Kroupi and Barcola. But each option comes with its own complications. Kroupi could cost as much as Rogers did. Barcola would require prising a key player from PSG. Neither is straightforward.
The clock is ticking. The Premier League season is approaching fast, and Arteta still lacks the high-profile attacking reinforcement he wanted. Arsenal’s refusal to pay over the odds for Rogers might prove to be smart financial discipline. Or it might leave them short where it matters most.
One thing’s clear: Chelsea aren’t just spending big. They’re targeting the exact same players Arsenal want. And right now, they’re winning that battle.
