It’s déjà vu for Arsenal fans. Just days after Chelsea snatched Morgan Rogers from under their noses, the Blues are circling again. This time, the target is John Stones — and the stakes are personal.
The 32-year-old England defender left Manchester City this summer after a trophy-laden decade at the Etihad. He’s available on a free transfer. And two of London’s biggest clubs want him badly.
Why Arsenal Want Stones and Why They’re Favourites
Arsenal’s interest isn’t random. It’s driven by necessity and nostalgia in equal measure.
William Saliba suffered a back injury during France’s World Cup semi-final against Spain, going down without contact after just 30 minutes. He’d been managing the problem since March but pushed through the pain to start six matches for Les Bleus. Now the bill has come due.
Reports from L’Equipe suggest Saliba could avoid surgery, with doctors leaning toward a long-term rehabilitation plan. But even in a best-case scenario, Arsenal’s title defence begins on August 22 — and Saliba’s availability remains uncertain.
Enter Stones.
According to TEAMtalk, Arsenal hold an edge over Chelsea thanks to one key factor: Mikel Arteta’s relationship with the defender. The two worked together during Arteta’s stint as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at City between 2016 and 2019.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown put it simply to Football Insider: “He knows Mikel Arteta well after their time together at City, so I’m sure the manager will be playing a key role in convincing him of the move.”
Sources add that Stones wants to settle in London long-term. He’s also keen to begin building his coaching credentials, and any deal is expected to include a pathway into that world. Arsenal, with Arteta’s mentorship on offer, can provide exactly that.
Chelsea Aren’t Going Away Quietly
Don’t count Chelsea out, though. The Athletic reported that the Blues have added Stones to their summer shortlist as Xabi Alonso shapes his squad for his first season in charge.
Here’s what makes Chelsea’s interest interesting:
- They’ve historically favoured younger signings with sell-on value
- Stones, at 32, breaks that mould entirely
- But Chelsea seem willing to bend their own rules for proven Premier League experience
And this wouldn’t be Chelsea’s first summer hijack of an Arsenal target. The Blues agreed a staggering £117 million fee for Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa — a player Arsenal believed they had all but secured.
Fabrizio Romano explained that Chelsea entered the Rogers negotiations aggressively, arriving with an offer designed to close the deal immediately. Arsenal, who were reportedly unwilling to go beyond £90-100 million, were left empty-handed.
Could history repeat itself with Stones?
The Wider Picture
Arsenal aren’t the only club in the mix. Stones’ agents at The Team Agency have fielded interest from across Europe:
- Juventus have been particularly keen, though Serie A wage budgets pose a challenge
- Inter Milan and AC Milan were both approached, per Fabrizio Romano
- Everton, Stones’ former club, could offer guaranteed minutes and an emotional pull
But Stones’ preference for London narrows the field considerably. His World Cup form — helping England to a third-place finish — has only boosted his stock. Despite limited game time in his final City season, he proved he can still perform when it matters.
The coming weeks will be decisive. Talks between Stones’ camp and interested clubs are ongoing. Arsenal have the relationship. Chelsea have the financial muscle and a track record of swooping late.
For the Gunners, missing out on Rogers stung. Losing Stones too would raise serious questions about whether their transfer strategy is too cautious for this summer’s market. Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta know they need defensive cover — and they know the perfect candidate personally.
