Arsenal fans have been refreshing their socials non-stop. And who can blame them?
Bruno Guimaraes, the Brazilian midfielder they’ve chased for the better part of six years, is reportedly already training with Mikel Arteta’s squad at London Colney. The £75 million deal with Newcastle United? Agreed. The medical? Done. The announcement? Still nowhere to be seen.
So what’s the hold-up?
Paperwork Problems and Furious Magpies
The delay isn’t about money. Both clubs have settled on a £75m flat fee — no add-ons — to be paid across 24 months. David Ornstein of The Athletic confirmed the agreement earlier this week, noting that Arsenal started lower, Newcastle demanded higher, and the two sides eventually found middle ground.
The snag, according to reports from Diario AS via The Sun, is purely bureaucratic. Administrative paperwork hasn’t been fully processed, and until it is, Arsenal can’t roll out the official unveiling.
But there’s more to it than red tape.
ESPN Brazil journalist Bruno Andrade shed light on another layer. According to his sources, Newcastle were furious that details of the agreement leaked before they were ready. The Magpies had reportedly wanted to coordinate the announcement — unveiling Guimaraes’ replacement at the same time as confirming his departure. That coordination simply wasn’t possible on the original timeline.
“There is nothing left to negotiate. Nothing else needs to be discussed,” Andrade said. “It’s much more about the timing of the announcement.”
In the meantime, Guimaraes isn’t waiting around. He’s already integrated with his new teammates and took part in pre-season training under Arteta on Friday. The club clearly expects these formalities to be wrapped up soon.
An End to a Brilliant Chapter on Tyneside
For Newcastle, letting Guimaraes go is a bitter pill. He joined from Lyon in January 2022 for £40m and became one of the most influential players in the squad — eventually wearing the captain’s armband.
His numbers tell part of the story: 195 appearances, 31 goals, 32 assists. But his impact went deeper than stats.
He was the heartbeat of the side that ended Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a major trophy, winning the Carabao Cup in 2025. He led by example and connected the dressing room to the fanbase in a way few modern players manage. Losing him isn’t just a tactical blow. It’s an emotional one.
When he arrived at Newcastle’s pre-season camp in La Manga last week, Guimaraes met newly appointed head coach Matthias Jaissle to personally request his transfer. Shortly after, he flew to London for his medical. The parting, by all accounts, was amicable.
Newcastle’s Turbulent Summer Rolls On
Guimaraes’ exit is just the latest chapter in what’s been a chaotic window at St James’ Park.
Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have already departed in high-profile sales worth a combined €188m. Eddie Howe stepped down after nearly five years in charge. And Jaissle, the 38-year-old German who replaced him, has inherited a squad in serious transition — arriving just two weeks before the season opener.
To make things worse, key recruitment targets slipped away. Johan Manzambi chose Aston Villa. Victor Munoz signed with Liverpool.
Newcastle now face the task of rebuilding around younger, less proven talent while trying to recapture the momentum Howe built. It’s a huge ask, even with the funds from this summer’s sales.
For Arsenal, though, the mood couldn’t be more different. Guimaraes fills a midfield gap Arteta has been trying to address since 2020. Alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, he gives the Gunners arguably the deepest and most versatile midfield in the Premier League.
Asked about the signing after Arsenal’s pre-season defeat to Betis, Arteta played coy: “I cannot talk about any player that is not an Arsenal player.” But the wry smile on his face told a different story.
The announcement is coming. It’s just a matter of when.
