Arsenal fans have had plenty to celebrate this summer. A first Premier League title in 22 years. A Champions League final appearance. And now, some genuinely encouraging injury news.
Ben White is on track to rejoin pre-season preparations after the medial knee ligament injury that cut short his 2025/26 campaign. It’s a recovery timeline that looked tight — but the defender appears to be hitting every milestone.
What happened to White?
The injury came at the worst possible time. White went down in the first half of Arsenal’s win at West Ham on May 10, hurt in a challenge with Crysencio Summerville.
Arsenal confirmed the damage: a significant medial knee ligament injury. That ruled him out of:
- The final two Premier League matches
- The Champions League final against PSG in Budapest
- England’s 2026 World Cup campaign
The silver lining? No surgery was required. Arsenal’s medical staff targeted a pre-season return from the outset, and that plan hasn’t wavered.
White’s absence was felt in Budapest. Arsenal took the lead through Kai Havertz inside six minutes but couldn’t hold on. Ousmane Dembele’s second-half penalty forced extra time, and PSG eventually won 4-3 on penalties. Could White have made the difference? We’ll never know.
Where does White stand at the club?
That’s the question everyone’s been asking. His future has been a hot topic for months now.
White made just seven Premier League starts last season. Jurrien Timber overtook him in the pecking order at right-back. Reports from The Telegraph in early July suggested he was “expected” to leave this summer.
Everton, Crystal Palace, and even Barcelona were all linked. Arsenal explored replacements too, with Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa and Roma’s Wesley Franca among the names scouted.
But here’s where things get interesting.
Arsenal insider James McNicholas poured cold water on the exit talk in mid-June. Speaking on the Arsecast podcast, he said he hadn’t heard of any “dramatic or imminent developments” regarding White’s future.
The defender himself is reportedly reluctant to drop down in level. And with Timber withdrawing from the Netherlands’ World Cup squad due to a groin issue, Arsenal’s defensive depth suddenly looks thinner than planned.
A fit and firing White could change the equation entirely.
What does this mean for the 2026/27 campaign?
Arsenal’s pre-season officially starts at London Colney on July 20. But several players — White included — have already travelled to a fitness camp in Marbella with Mikel Arteta’s revamped medical team.
It’s a packed schedule ahead. Five friendlies are lined up before the Premier League kicks off:
- Girona in Spain on August 1
- Real Betis in Dublin on August 5
- Borussia Dortmund and Como at the Emirates in mid-August
- Community Shield vs Manchester City on August 16
Then it’s Coventry City at home on August 21 to begin the title defence.
White’s versatility remains a real asset. He can slot in at right-back or centre-back, and his understanding with Bukayo Saka down Arsenal’s right flank was one of the best partnerships in the league before injuries intervened.
Getting him integrated early matters. Last season, Arsenal played 63 matches across four competitions. The 2026/27 campaign won’t be any lighter.
Arteta’s squad management has been a strength. David Raya won a third consecutive Golden Glove. William Saliba and Gabriel were immense at the back. The foundations are solid. But depth is what separates a one-season wonder from a dynasty.
White’s return won’t make front-page headlines. It’s not a marquee signing or a record-breaking deal. But sometimes the most valuable addition to a squad is someone who’s already there — fit, experienced, and ready to go.
For a club defending their Premier League crown and hungry for that elusive Champions League trophy, having Ben White back in the fold is quietly significant. Don’t underestimate it.
