The PSG Complication
Here’s the tricky part. Diomande isn’t exactly a free agent waiting for offers.
PSG have been in advanced negotiations with Leipzig for weeks. According to L’Equipe, the two clubs held what were described as “intensive” talks. RMC Sport confirmed that the 19-year-old agreed personal terms on a five-year deal with PSG after choosing them over Liverpool.
But this saga has stalled. Leipzig are reportedly holding firm on a fee above €100 million. PSG don’t want to overpay. And a recent BILD report suggested Leipzig may now prefer to keep Diomande for another season entirely, only entertaining a delayed 2027 departure.
That stalemate? It’s exactly what Arsenal are hoping to exploit.
Romano’s report makes clear that Arsenal’s contact with Diomande’s representatives is about gauging whether there’s an opening. If PSG can’t close a deal, Arsenal want to be first in line.
Can they afford it? They’ve shown they’re willing to spend. Reports earlier this year from Fichajes suggested the Gunners were prepared to go as high as €100 million. An €8 million-a-year salary package was also floated to tempt the winger away from his current €500,000-a-year Leipzig wages.
Arsenal’s Bigger Picture This Summer
Diomande isn’t the only name on Arsenal’s shortlist. Julian Alvarez remains a live target too.
The Argentina striker publicly confirmed his desire to leave Atletico Madrid during the World Cup. He told reporters he’d spoken to the club and that a transfer would be best for everyone.
But Alvarez reportedly prefers a move to Barcelona. And Atletico’s €500 million release clause is designed to scare everyone off. Arsenal would need to negotiate well below that figure, likely in the €120-150 million range, with Atletico preferring to deal with them over Barcelona due to existing tensions between the two La Liga clubs.
Arsenal have already made moves this summer. Piero Hincapie, Illan Meslier, and Christos Tzolis are either done deals or close to completion. But a marquee attacker remains the missing piece.
Losing Rogers stings. There’s no way around it. But Arsenal’s quick pivot to Diomande shows a recruitment team that doesn’t dwell on setbacks. They adapt. They move fast. And they’ve clearly had contingency plans in place all along.
