With England’s World Cup dream shattered and William Saliba facing months on the sidelines, Arsenal aren’t wasting a second. The Gunners have turned their attention to Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa — and a bid is reportedly on its way.
So what’s behind this move, and can Arsenal actually pull it off?
Saliba’s Injury Changes Everything
The timing here isn’t coincidental. Saliba was forced off just 30 minutes into France’s World Cup semi-final against Spain after his back gave out. Reports from L’Equipe suggest the 25-year-old had been playing through a back fracture for weeks, relying on painkillers and skipping training sessions to stay available.
According to the same outlet, he’s now expected to miss four to five months. That’s a huge chunk of the 2026/27 season gone before it even starts.
Mikel Arteta can’t afford to stand still. Losing Saliba — who featured in 43 matches across the Premier League and Champions League last season — leaves a gaping hole next to Gabriel Magalhães.
Enter Konsa.
Why Konsa Makes Sense for Arsenal
The 28-year-old England international ticks several boxes for Arteta. He’s Premier League-proven, having been a fixture in Unai Emery’s side for years. He helped Villa win the Europa League this past season. And he’s versatile — comfortable at centre-back or right-back.
Konsa’s World Cup wasn’t bad either. He started matches throughout England’s run to the semi-finals, where a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Argentina in Atlanta ended their tournament. With England now facing a third-place playoff, his summer duties are almost done.
Here’s where it gets complicated, though.
According to Mail Sport journalist Tom Collomosse, Arsenal are preparing a bid, but there’s a significant gap in valuation between the two clubs. Football Insider reports Villa will demand north of £50 million. Some Villa supporters reckon it should be closer to £60 million.
Konsa still has two years on his contract. He hasn’t ruled out signing an extension. But he’s keeping his options open — and that’s enough for Arsenal to push forward.
Villa’s Financial Tightrope Could Open the Door
This is the part that makes the deal plausible despite Villa’s reluctance.
Villa are operating under a UEFA settlement agreement after breaching squad cost and financial earnings rules. They were hit with an €11 million fine last year and must meet strict spending targets across a three-year period.
That means every incoming signing has to be offset by outgoings. Youri Tielemans has already been sold to Manchester United for £35 million. Lucas Digne is expected to follow him out the door. And Konsa himself acknowledged the situation publicly last season, telling the BBC that financial restrictions had “killed” Villa’s transfer window.
Could the same restrictions force Villa’s hand again this summer?
It’s possible. Especially when you consider Arsenal aren’t just knocking once. They’re also pursuing Villa’s Morgan Rogers, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Villa want £130 million for the attacking midfielder. Personal terms between Rogers and Arsenal are reportedly close to agreed.
Negotiating for two key players from the same club in one window? That’s bold. But Arsenal clearly have the financial muscle and the ambition to try.
For Arteta, this isn’t just about patching up a Saliba-shaped problem. It’s about building a squad deep enough to defend the Premier League title and mount another Champions League challenge. Konsa would provide elite-level cover now and a long-term option for years to come.
The next few days should tell us a lot. With the World Cup winding down and pre-season approaching fast, Arsenal are expected to submit a formal offer shortly. Whether Villa accept — or dig their heels in — will define one of the summer’s most fascinating transfer sagas.
