Arsenal aren’t the only Premier League heavyweights chasing Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal this summer. Manchester City have reportedly gone a step further, actively exploring whether they can prise the 19-year-old away from Camp Nou.
But here’s the catch. Bernal doesn’t want to leave.
Why City and Arsenal Want Bernal
According to Spanish outlet SPORT, City have placed Bernal on their midfield shortlist as uncertainty swirls around Rodri’s future at the Etihad. The Spanish World Cup winner is entering the final year of his contract, and Real Madrid are pushing hard to bring him back to La Liga.
City aren’t waiting around. They’re already assessing alternatives, with Bernal sitting alongside Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Bayern Munich’s Aleksandar Pavlovic on that list.
Arsenal’s interest runs deeper than this summer, though. Reports from Mundo Deportivo, cited by The Hard Tackle, suggest the Gunners have been the most serious English club in the race. They’ve reportedly gathered information on Bernal and view him as a priority midfield target.
It’s easy to see why. At just 19, Bernal already ticks every box Mikel Arteta looks for:
- Tactical intelligence well beyond his years
- Strong defensive positioning from a holding midfield role
- Comfortable on the ball under pressure
- A La Masia graduate with elite technical foundations
He stands 193cm tall, which adds a physical dimension that’s rare in technically gifted deep-lying midfielders. And he’s already won two La Liga titles and two Spanish Super Cups with Barcelona’s first team.
Bernal’s Comeback Story
What makes Bernal’s rise even more impressive is the setback he’s overcome. In August 2024, just days after making his senior debut at 17, he suffered a devastating knee injury against Rayo Vallecano. He was sidelined for over a year.
Most teenagers would’ve struggled to recover from that. Bernal didn’t just recover — he came back and nailed down a regular starting spot under Hansi Flick during the 2025-26 campaign.
He made 17 La Liga appearances and chipped in with two goals. His form was strong enough to put him in the conversation for Spain’s 2026 World Cup squad, though he narrowly missed out.
Barcelona rewarded his progress with a contract extension through 2029. That deal includes a staggering €500 million release clause.
And that release clause is, frankly, the whole story.
Why This Transfer Probably Won’t Happen
No club is paying €500 million for a teenager. Not Arsenal. Not City. Not anyone.
Barcelona know exactly what they’ve got. They see Bernal as a cornerstone of the club’s future alongside Pedri and Lamine Yamal. Flick considers him untouchable.
Bernal himself has made his feelings crystal clear. When asked about interest from English clubs, he reportedly told them his position was unwavering. Mundo Deportivo reported that he sent every suitor the same message — he’s staying at Barcelona, full stop.
Even when Barcelona offered him a loan move in January to get more minutes, he turned it down. He later said he was glad he stayed.
Barcelona are now expected to accelerate talks over an improved deal. His current salary is believed to be among the lowest in the senior squad. The club want to reward his development and, just as importantly, fend off the growing interest from England’s elite.
For Arsenal, the door appears firmly shut for now. The Gunners continue to explore other midfield options, Bruno Guimaraes, and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott all reportedly on their radar.
Could circumstances change down the line? In football, they always can. But right now, Marc Bernal is Barcelona through and through. Arsenal and City will almost certainly need to look elsewhere.
