Napoli aren’t messing around this summer. With Romelu Lukaku all but out the door, the Serie A club have turned their attention to Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus. And according to multiple reliable sources, this isn’t just idle gossip — contact has already been made.
So what’s driving this move? And can Napoli actually pull it off?
The Lukaku Problem
Let’s start with why Napoli need a striker in the first place.
Romelu Lukaku’s time in Naples is over. The Belgian skipped the club’s pre-season training camp in Castel di Sangro, making the split official in all but paperwork. After a promising first season that helped deliver the 2024-25 Scudetto, his second year was a disaster.
Just one goal in five Serie A appearances. Injuries. A falling-out with the club hierarchy. Training alone in Belgium instead of returning to Italy.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Napoli have made contact with Jesus’s representatives. Gianluca Di Marzio backed it up, noting that head coach Massimiliano Allegri has been a long-time admirer of the Brazilian.
There’s also a behind-the-scenes connection that makes this deal feel more natural than it looks. Jesus switched agents in January 2026 and is now represented by the Branchini group — the same agency that manages Allegri. That shared link has apparently been smoothing the path for discussions.
From Jesus’s perspective, there’s motivation to move. He started just nine matches across all competitions for Arsenal last season, registering three goals in 27 appearances. With Leandro Trossard already sold, Mikel Arteta‘s attacking plans don’t seem to revolve around the 29-year-old anymore either.
Arsenal aren’t making it easy, though. They’ve set a minimum price of €20 million and insist on a permanent deal — no loans. Jesus’s contract runs until 2027, so that stance makes sense from their end.
The salary is another sticking point. Jesus earns significant wages in the Premier League, and matching that in Serie A won’t be straightforward. According to Sports Mole, the two clubs haven’t even reached that stage of talks yet.
What Needs to Happen Next
This deal has a domino effect built into it.
Romano and colleague Matteo Moretto have been clear: Jesus would only arrive at Napoli if both Lukaku and Lorenzo Lucca leave first. Allegri plans to build his attack around Rasmus Hojlund, but he wants a proven, experienced partner alongside him. Jesus fits that profile perfectly.
