It’s one of those transfers that makes you do a double-take. Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, reportedly asked about signing Cristian Romero — Tottenham’s captain. Yes, that Tottenham. Their fiercest rivals.
Unsurprisingly, Spurs slammed the door shut before it even cracked open.
Why Arsenal Even Tried
The desperation is real. William Saliba, Arsenal’s defensive cornerstone, went down with a back injury during France’s World Cup semifinal defeat to Spain. He didn’t need surgery, but the club confirmed he’d miss an extended period of rehabilitation.
That’s a massive problem when you’re trying to defend a league title.
Mikel Arteta has options in Jurrien Timber, Ben White, and last summer signing Cristian Mosquera. But he wants another right-footed centre-back. And he wants one fast.
Arsenal already had a bid for Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa rejected. Villa are holding firm at £60 million and aren’t keen to lose another key player after Youri Tielemans left for Manchester United.
So the Gunners cast their net wider. Much wider.
According to The Athletic, Arsenal registered an interest in Romero this week. Fabrizio Romano confirmed enquiries had been made, adding that Spurs would much rather sell abroad.

There’s too much history. Too much bad blood. It was never going to fly.
Romero spent five seasons at Spurs. He led them to the Europa League title in 2024-25. He was handed the captain’s armband after Son Heung-min’s departure to LAFC last summer. He’s not just any player — he’s a symbol.
But he does want to leave.
Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham’s new manager, has already acknowledged this publicly. He’s said he won’t stand in Romero’s way if the defender wants a fresh start. The club has also planned ahead, signing Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million and Marcos Senesi on a free from Bournemouth.
They’re ready for life after Romero. Just not life with Romero at Arsenal.
So Where Does Romero Actually End Up?

Sky Sports reports that numbers have been discussed between Atletico and Tottenham, though no formal offer has landed yet. It could be wrapped up in days.
For Arsenal, it’s back to the drawing board. Konsa remains their top target, with reports suggesting a second bid — potentially around £65 million — is being prepared. Villa’s squad mates reportedly believe he’ll leave before the September 1 deadline.
But if that doesn’t work? Arteta will need to get creative. With the Premier League season kicking off on August 21 against promoted Coventry, the clock is ticking loud.
One thing’s clear: Cristian Romero won’t be solving Arsenal’s problems. Not now. Not ever. Spurs made sure of that.
