It was supposed to be a routine night in Dublin. Instead, Arsenal left the Aviva Stadium nursing a 3-1 defeat and genuine concern over one of their brightest young talents.
Louie Copley, 19, was stretchered off with a knee injury just ten minutes after coming on against Real Betis. And Mikel Arteta’s post-match words didn’t offer much comfort.
Copley’s Night Ends Before It Really Begins
Copley replaced captain Ben White at half-time, slotting into an unfamiliar right-back role. It’s a position the midfielder has filled before — he did the same against Girona days earlier. But this time, things went wrong quickly.
The teenager got his studs caught in the turf and went down in visible pain. Arsenal’s medical staff rushed on. He needed help to get back on his feet and couldn’t continue.

Copley’s injury overshadowed what was already a frustrating evening for Arsenal. Real Betis punished sloppy defending to score three times before the break.

That’s a packed schedule. And it’s why Copley’s scan result matters beyond just one player’s fitness. Depth will be tested early this season.
For the teenager, all anyone can do is wait and hope. Pre-season injuries are cruel, especially for academy players fighting for a foothold. Every minute counts at this stage of a career.
