Mikel Arteta doesn’t hand out praise lightly. So when the Arsenal boss singles out a 16-year-old after a pre-season demolition of Girona, you know the kid’s done something special.
Max Dowman grabbed a goal and an assist in Arsenal’s 4-1 win over the Spanish side on Saturday. It was the kind of performance that gets fans dreaming. But Arteta? He wants even more.
Speaking to Arsenal Media after the match, Arteta said:
“That’s what we want when you play for Arsenal. Expectations should be high and should be expecting really good things. We know what he’s capable of doing. We want to be more consistent in terms of performance and the actions that he can deliver. I think today he had a really good game.”
It’s a fascinating message. Praise wrapped in a challenge. And it tells you everything about where Dowman sits in Arteta’s plans.
A breakout season that broke records
If you haven’t been paying attention to Dowman’s rise, here’s the short version: it’s been historic.
The Chelmsford-born midfielder joined Arsenal’s Hale End academy at eight years old. He made his senior debut in August 2025 against Leeds United, becoming one of the youngest players ever to appear in the Premier League. That alone would’ve been enough for most teenagers.
But Dowman kept going.
- He became the youngest player in Champions League history at 15 years and 308 days old, coming on against Slavia Prague in November 2025.
- On March 14, 2026, he scored a 97th-minute solo goal against Everton, making him the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history at 16 years and 73 days.
- He played a part as Arsenal won the 2025-26 Premier League title — their first in 22 years — and reached the Champions League final in Budapest.
He also signed a pre-contract agreement with Arsenal in January 2026, committing his future to the club before he’s even old enough to sign professional terms.
Those aren’t just impressive numbers for a teenager. They’re remarkable for any player.
Why consistency is the next step
So why is Arteta pushing for more?
Because talent alone doesn’t win you a starting spot at a Premier League champion. Arteta has been down this road before with Hale End graduates. Bukayo Saka went from academy hopeful to one of the best wingers in world football. Ethan Nwaneri had a breakthrough campaign in 2024-25. Dowman’s pre-season display against Girona was exactly the kind of moment Arteta needs to see more of. He slipped a brilliant through ball to Kai Havertz for the opener. He drilled a powerful finish from outside the box to restore Arsenal’s lead after Girona pulled one back. According to ESPN, he was “a class above” the Catalan side.
But pre-season and Premier League Saturdays are different animals. Arteta knows that. And he’s making sure Dowman knows it too.
What comes next for Dowman
Arsenal’s 2026-27 campaign kicks off against newly promoted Coventry on August 21. Before that, they’ve got friendlies against Real Betis, Borussia Dortmund, and Como, plus the Community Shield on August 16.
That’s a lot of runway for Dowman to stake his claim.
The competition is fierce, though. Arsenal have added Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for around £34 million, and he scored on his debut against Girona too. Viktor Gyokeres, Saka, and Havertz aren’t going anywhere. Getting minutes won’t be easy.
But that’s sort of the point, isn’t it? Arteta doesn’t want Dowman to coast on potential. He wants him to fight for every appearance, deliver in every session, and prove he can do it week after week.
At 16, most kids are worrying about exams. Dowman’s trying to nail down a regular role at the reigning Premier League champions. The fact that it even feels plausible tells you how far he’s already come — and how far Arteta believes he can still go.
