The saga is almost over. After weeks of rejected bids, tense negotiations, and endless rumour, it’s reported that Arsenal have finally struck a deal to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United.
The Brazilian midfielder is expected to undergo his medical on Monday at London Colney. A five-year contract is already agreed. And just like that, Arsenal’s summer window has exploded into life.
How the Deal Came Together
Arsenal didn’t get here overnight. The Gunners had three previous bids knocked back — at £55m, £65m, and £70m — before Newcastle finally accepted a package worth £80m. That breaks down to an initial £70m fee with a further £10m in performance-related add-ons.
So what changed? A lot, actually.
Eddie Howe’s shock departure from St James’ Park last week sent ripples through the club. Newcastle moved fast to appoint Matthias Jaissle from Al-Ahli, but the managerial upheaval clearly loosened the grip on their captain.
Guimaraes himself had told Newcastle he wanted to leave. He didn’t go on strike like Alexander Isak did before his Liverpool move. But his intentions were crystal clear.

What Guimaraes Brings to Arsenal’s Midfield
Why has Mikel Arteta pushed so hard for this signing? The numbers tell part of the story. Last season, Guimaraes delivered nine goals and five assists in 29 Premier League appearances — impressive returns from central midfield.
He also starred for Brazil at the 2026 World Cup, further cementing his reputation on the global stage.
But it goes beyond stats. Here’s what makes him such a fit for Arsenal:

Norgaard Exit Paves the Way
The deal also triggers movement in the other direction. Christian Norgaard, who joined Arsenal from Brentford for £10m last summer, is heading to Everton in a £7m deal.
The Danish midfielder never really got going at the Emirates. He managed just seven Premier League appearances and only 101 minutes of league action. A complete professional throughout, but Arteta’s plans simply didn’t have room for him.
Norgaard’s departure frees up squad space and offsets a portion of the Guimaraes fee. Everton, under David Moyes, see him as a direct replacement for the departed Idrissa Gueye.
What Happens Next
If the Monday medical goes smoothly — and there’s no reason to expect otherwise — Arsenal could announce Guimaraes as their player within days. The club are already Premier League champions and Champions League finalists. Adding a midfielder of this calibre signals they aren’t interested in standing still.
For Newcastle, it’s another painful exit. But the £80m fee gives Jaissle funds to rebuild as he begins a new era at St James’ Park.
One thing’s certain: this is the kind of signing that makes rivals take notice. Arsenal’s midfield, already strong, just got a whole lot stronger.
