Arsenal’s pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes has turned into the saga of the summer. And it doesn’t look like it’s ending anytime soon.
Fabrizio Romano dropped a telling update on his YouTube channel, revealing that Mikel Arteta is personally driving the deal. According to Romano, the Arsenal boss considers Guimaraes the ideal midfielder for his system.
But here’s the problem: Newcastle aren’t interested in selling.
The Gunners have already had two bids knocked back — reportedly worth £55 million and £65 million. A third offer, believed to be around £70 million, has also been prepared. Newcastle sources have described that figure as a “non-starter,” according to the Chronicle’s Lee Ryder.

A Deal Between Player and Club — But Not Between Clubs
One of the most fascinating parts of this transfer is the disconnect between the two sides of the negotiation.
On one hand, Guimaraes and Arsenal reportedly have an agreement in principle on personal terms. The 28-year-old wants to join the Premier League champions. He’s told Newcastle he’d like to leave.
But — and this matters — he won’t force an exit. He respects the club that signed him from Lyon four and a half years ago. He doesn’t want to burn bridges.
On Newcastle’s side, the stance hasn’t shifted. They value their captain at closer to £100 million, according to TEAMtalk. Having already lost three key players in the last twelve months, they’re drawing a firm line.
Those departures tell a bigger story:

- Anthony Gordon joined Barcelona for around £69 million this window.
- Sandro Tonali moved to Tottenham in a deal worth up to £100 million.

Why Guimaraes Wants Out
It’s easy to understand the player’s perspective. TEAMtalk reported three main reasons behind his desire to leave.
First, the constant departures around him. Watching teammates like Isak, Gordon, and Tonali walk out the door has been frustrating. The squad he signed up for isn’t the same squad anymore.
Second, there’s no Champions League football at St James’ Park next season. Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League last year — a far cry from the ambitions Guimaraes bought into when he arrived.
Third, timing. He turns 29 in November. Those around him feel this could be his last shot at a big move to an elite club competing for major trophies.
Arsenal, by contrast, won the league last season. They came within a penalty shootout of lifting the Champions League. That’s a compelling pitch for any midfielder.
What Happens Next?
Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta is known for working multiple targets at once. So while Guimaraes remains the priority, the club isn’t sitting still.
Reports suggest enquiries have gone out for several alternatives:
- Alex Scott at Bournemouth
- Manu Kone at Roma
- Ayyoub Bouaddi at Lille
- Hugo Larsson at Eintracht Frankfurt
Still, Arteta clearly has his heart set on the Newcastle captain. The BBC reported that the Gunners are preparing an improved offer, and FootballTransfers sources have indicated that only “finishing touches” remain before a deal can be completed.
Chelsea were briefly linked, but the Daily Mail’s Bobby Manzi confirmed they’ve categorically denied any interest.
So it comes down to price. Arsenal won’t go crazy — they walked away from Morgan Rogers when the fee reached £117 million. But they aren’t giving up either. Expect more bids. Expect more rejections. And expect this story to run until deadline day.
