Arsenal aren’t hanging around. Days after losing Morgan Rogers to Chelsea in a jaw-dropping £117 million deal, the Gunners have already pivoted. Their new target? RB Leipzig’s electric 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed on July 20 that Arsenal have made fresh contact with Diomande’s representatives. It’s an opportunistic move — and it could pay off.
Why Arsenal Are Circling Diomande
The Rogers saga left a mark. Arsenal had identified the Aston Villa star as their top attacking target, only for Chelsea and new manager Xabi Alonso to swoop in late. Romano himself noted that Arsenal were never prepared to go beyond £100 million for Rogers.
So now the Gunners are exploring alternatives. And Diomande’s situation is interesting.
PSG agreed personal terms with the Ivory Coast international back in June. But here’s the catch — they still haven’t agreed a fee with Leipzig. Weeks have passed. The gap between what PSG want to pay and what Leipzig are demanding remains wide.
Leipzig have reportedly set their asking price at around €130 million. PSG consider that too high. That stalemate has created a window of opportunity, and Arsenal have stepped through it.
Romano put it plainly on his YouTube channel:
“Arsenal, over the last few days, made some checks with the agents of Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig to understand if there was still a chance to enter the deal.”
What Makes Diomande Worth the Fuss?
The numbers speak for themselves. In his first full season at Leipzig, Diomande delivered:
- 13 goals and 10 assists across 36 appearances
- A hat-trick against Eintracht Frankfurt in a 6-0 win, making him the second-youngest player to achieve that in Bundesliga history
- Man of the Match in Ivory Coast’s World Cup opener against Ecuador
He’s 19. He’s right-footed but comfortable on either flank. He’s quick, direct, and has a nose for goal. It’s not hard to see why half of Europe is watching.
Leipzig signed him for just €20 million from Leganés in July 2025. One year later, his Transfermarkt valuation sits at €90 million. That kind of trajectory doesn’t come around often.
Even Leipzig’s sporting director Marcel Schafer acknowledged the inevitable, while trying to pump the brakes. He told reporters that Leipzig’s “clear intention” was to keep Diomande for at least one more season, adding that the club “will not back down.”
Diomande, however, wasn’t so diplomatic. He publicly stated he expects to leave this summer.
Can Arsenal Actually Win This Race?
That’s the big question. PSG still lead. They’ve got a personal terms agreement in place, and Luis Enrique’s project in Paris holds obvious appeal for a young Francophone talent.
But complications are mounting for the French club. Reports from L’Equipe and Bild have highlighted several sticking points:
- Leipzig’s refusal to budge on valuation
- Unresolved image rights issues involving Diomande’s agency, Roc Nation
- Leipzig reportedly suggesting a loan-back arrangement as a compromise
Liverpool were in the picture earlier too, submitting a €100 million package that Leipzig rejected. The Reds have since shifted focus toward PSG’s Bradley Barcola, which could thin the competition for Diomande slightly.
Arsenal’s advantage? They can act fast. Mikel Arteta’s side won the Premier League last season, and they can offer immediate Champions League football plus a clear pathway into the starting eleven. If PSG’s negotiations drag into August, Arsenal could position themselves as the more decisive option.
The Gunners are also working on other attacking targets, including Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge — a deal expected to come in around £35 million. Diomande represents the high-ceiling swing. Tzolis looks more like the pragmatic fix.
Diomande has been instructed to report to Leipzig’s preseason training on July 22. The transfer window doesn’t close until September 1 in France and August 15 in England. There’s time for this to twist in several directions.
For Arsenal fans, the message is clear: the club isn’t sitting still. Whether Diomande ends up at the Emirates or not, Arteta and his recruitment team are actively hunting. After three consecutive title races, standing still isn’t an option.
