Former Arsenal Star Lands First Managerial Role: Luton Town
Jack Wilshere is back in the spotlight, but this time, in the dugout. The former Arsenal star has been unveiled as Luton Town’s new manager, taking charge of the struggling League One side after Matt Bloomfield’s sacking last week.
It’s a major step up for the 33-year-old, who has been quietly building his coaching credentials since hanging up his boots in 2022. Wilshere, who made 197 appearances and scored 14 goals for Arsenal, spent a decade dazzling fans at the Emirates before short stints with West Ham, Bournemouth, and Danish side AGF Aarhus.
Now, he’s ready to prove himself as a manager. “It’s a huge honour and a privilege to be named Luton Town manager,” Wilshere said. “It feels like a full-circle moment for me. I was eight when I first came to Luton as a boy, so I guess you could say it’s fate… I couldn’t be more delighted; I can’t wait to manage this football club.”
Wilshere’s coaching journey began at Arsenal’s Under-18s, where he impressed by leading the team to the FA Youth Cup final in his debut season. Most recently, he worked with Norwich City under Johannes Hoff Thorup, experience that’s clearly prepared him for the big leap.
Luton sit 11th in League One, five points off the play-offs after a rocky start. The Hatters are desperate for a turnaround following back-to-back relegations and will hope Wilshere’s fiery personality injects some much-needed energy.
His first test? A crunch clash against Mansfield Town this weekend, before facing Northampton Town away.
It’s already been a chaotic year for Luton, three managers since January, with Rob Edwards and Bloomfield both shown the door. Alex Lawless took temporary charge in their 3-1 EFL Cup defeat to Cambridge, but now all eyes are on Wilshere to steady the ship.
For Luton, it’s a gamble. For Wilshere, it’s destiny. The boy who once kicked a ball in Luton’s youth ranks is back, this time, to lead the club into a new era.
