A Clear Message From Mikel Arteta To Lewis-Skelly

Arsenal’s Champions League campaign continues to gather momentum after a confident 2-0 victory over Olympiacos at the Emirates Stadium, a night that not only strengthened the Gunners’ European ambitions but also signaled the arrival of one of their brightest academy stars, Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Gabriel Martinelli struck first, reacting quickest after Viktor Gyokeres’ effort came back off the post. Despite dominating, Arsenal were frustrated by Olympiacos goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, who denied Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka with sharp stops.

David Raya had his own moment of brilliance, producing a stunning save to keep out Daniel Podence’s volley. Olympiacos briefly thought they’d equalised, but VAR ruled it out for offside. Saka finally sealed the points in stoppage time.

But the real story? Lewis-Skelly. On his Champions League debut, the 18-year-old slotted in at left-back and looked completely unfazed. Calm in defence, sharp in attack, he delivered a performance beyond his years.

Mikel Arteta was quick to send a clear message after the game. “Very good. I think he played a really, really good game. Every level, defensively and attacking, and he looked really focused,” the Arsenal boss said. “He understood really well when to take chances, when to keep the game flowing, and I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen today.”

It was praise that doubled as a statement: Lewis-Skelly is ready.

Arteta also highlighted Arsenal’s improved squad depth compared to last season. “With all respect, last season we had five academy players who had probably never played professional football in the Champions League, so yes, it makes a difference,” he said.

Six changes were made from the side that beat Newcastle. The intensity never dropped. “The ones that came in lifted the level and helped us win the game, and that’s great,” Arteta added.

The win ended a three-game losing streak against Olympiacos. More importantly, it underlined Arsenal’s European intent. And for Lewis-Skelly, it marked the moment he announced himself on the biggest stage.
