Arsenal’s blockbuster summer pursuit of Vinicius Junior is officially dead. The Brazilian superstar has signed a new six-year contract at Real Madrid, committing his future to the Bernabeu until 2032.
It’s a crushing blow for the Gunners, who’d made Vini their number one attacking target this window.
How the Deal Came Together
The saga dragged on for weeks. Vinicius entered the final 12 months of his previous deal, and Arsenal sensed a once-in-a-generation opportunity.
David Ornstein reported that the Gunners were “all in” on the 26-year-old winger, with the club matching his wage demands. Some Arsenal players reportedly considered the transfer a “done deal,” according to Spanish outlet AS.
But Real Madrid weren’t about to let their crown jewel walk away.
Fresh talks took place at Madrid’s training ground on Wednesday, and the mood shifted fast. Sky Sports described the discussions as “positive,” with the club raising their offer to reflect Vinicius’s importance to the project.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed on X with a Post saying:
“Story confirmed: Vinicius Jr new six year contract at Real Madrid, set to be signed and announced soon. Vini always wanted to stay at Real Madrid, Florentino Perez always considered Vini as key part of the project. Jose Mourinho also heavily involved.”
The new deal reportedly sees Vinicius earn a net annual salary of approximately €25 million, along with a boost in image rights. That makes him one of the highest-paid players at the club.
Mourinho’s Role Was Decisive
Don’t underestimate Jose Mourinho’s influence here.
The Portuguese manager personally stepped into negotiations. He sat down with Vinicius and laid out his plans for the team’s future, making it clear the Brazilian was central to everything.
Romano confirmed on social media that Mourinho was “pushing for Vini to stay.” According to CaughtOffside, the new coach told both the club and the player directly that he wanted Vinicius at the heart of his project.
That personal touch mattered. Vinicius had clashed with former manager Xabi Alonso throughout the 2025-26 season. ESPN reported that the chances of a renewal under Alonso were “non-existent.” Now that Mourinho had arrived, the entire dynamic changed.
Vinicius himself hinted at the shift after returning from the World Cup, telling Real Madrid TV:
“Mourinho wants me to be as I have always been: happy, joyful and to play my football.”
And there it was. The path back to an agreement opened up.
Where Does This Leave Arsenal?
Honestly? Back to square one on the left wing.
Arsenal had already signed Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge this summer, but he was never seen as the statement signing Mikel Arteta craved. The Gunners sold Leandro Trossard to Besiktas and needed a high-profile replacement on the left flank.
Vinicius — with 128 goals and 100 assists in 375 Madrid appearances — would’ve been exactly that. So who do they turn to now?
Reports suggest several alternatives are being explored:
- Antonio Nusa (RB Leipzig) — valued at around £52 million, he’s the reported frontrunner
- Bradley Barcola (PSG) — renewal talks have stalled, and he’s open to a move but in advance talks with Liverpool.
- Rafael Leao (AC Milan) — expected to leave the San Siro this summer but Galatasaray are leading.
- Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao) — a release clause of roughly £77 million makes him attainable
At least there’s some good news elsewhere. Arsenal are closing in on a £75 million deal for Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes, which would add serious quality in midfield.
But losing out on Vinicius stings. There’s no sugarcoating it. He was the kind of marquee signing that separates title defenders from dynasty builders. Arsenal now have to find that X-factor from a different source — and the clock is ticking before the window shuts.
