Arsenal Racing to Land Julian Alvarez Before Pre-Season

Arsenal push to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid before pre-season. Latest on fee, swap talks, Gyokeres, and the World Cup factor.

Alvarez and barcola on arsenal's transfer list

Fresh off their Premier League title triumph, the Gunners have zeroed in on Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez as their marquee signing.

According to The Independent, Mikel Arteta’s side want the deal wrapped up before players report back to London Colney ( for pre-season set to kick off on July 20). But with a stubborn valuation gap and the World Cup still in full swing, pulling this off won’t be straightforward.

So where do things actually stand?

First, The Price Tag Problem

Here’s the sticking point. Arsenal don’t want to go above £90m. Atletico Madrid are demanding north of £100m. That’s a significant gap when you’re talking about one of the most in-demand strikers in European football.

Atletico aren’t bluffing, either. They’ve already laughed off two bids from La Liga rivals:

  • Barcelona had an official €100m offer rejected in a chaotic version.
  • Real Madrid’s €150m approach — widely viewed as a political gesture following Florentino Perez’s re-election — was similarly dismissed

The Spanish club’s stance is clear. They’d rather lose Alvarez to Arsenal or PSG than strengthen a domestic competitor and primarily Barcelona. That’s a big advantage for the Gunners.

PSG, meanwhile, appear to have moved on. That leaves Arsenal with a remarkably clear run at a player who, just months ago, seemed destined for Barcelona.

Alvarez Wants Out — He’s Said So Himself

This isn’t speculation. Alvarez went public after Argentina’s 2-0 World Cup group stage win over Austria.

“I spoke with the people at Atletico I needed to speak with, and the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream,” he said. “It’s not the time to talk about this, but I also can’t hide it. I try to be an honest person.”

That kind of public declaration changes things. It puts pressure on Atletico to negotiate rather than stonewall. And it tells Arsenal they’re not chasing a reluctant target.

His numbers back up the ambition too. Alvarez registered 20 goals and 9 assists across 49 appearances for Atletico in 2025-26. Ten of those goals came in the Champions League alone. He’s a proven performer at the highest level, and he already knows the Premier League from his time at Manchester City.

Would he walk straight into Arsenal’s starting lineup? Almost certainly. Viktor Gyokeres scored 21 goals in his debut season at the Emirates, but Alvarez offers a different profile entirely — a more complete forward who can drop deep, link play, and still finish clinically.

The Gyokeres Question

Spanish reports from El Chiringuito claimed Arsenal had already agreed a deal worth €50m plus Gyokeres in exchange for Alvarez. TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey poured cold water on that, insisting no such agreement exists.

But conversations are ongoing.

Atletico have enquired about both Gyokeres and Ethan Nwaneri during discussions with Arsenal. It’s no secret they admire the Swedish striker. If they lose Alvarez, Gyokeres is exactly the kind of pure number nine Diego Simeone would want as a replacement — and it would allow Atletico to move on Alexander Sorloth.

Arsenal, though, aren’t keen. The club believes Gyokeres has serious room for growth and don’t want to sacrifice him. Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta reportedly see the 27-year-old as a future top-five Premier League striker.

The ideal scenario for Arsenal? Sign Alvarez and keep Gyokeres. That would give them a frightening attacking rotation alongside Kai Havertz and the emerging Nwaneri.

It’s ambitious. But this is a club that just won the league. Why wouldn’t they push for it?

A Busy Summer in North London

Alvarez would be the headline act, but Arsenal’s window is shaping up nicely regardless. They’ve already secured Piero Hincapie on a permanent deal from Bayer Leverkusen and brought in goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free from Leeds United. Christos Tzolis is close to completing a £35m move from Club Brugge, which would make him the most expensive Greek player in history.

Talks over Bruno Guimaraes continue too, though Newcastle’s £90m asking price is proving difficult.

Add Alvarez to that list and you’re looking at a squad capable of defending the title and making a genuine push for the Champions League.

The next seven days will be telling. With Argentina still alive in the World Cup, a final agreement may need to wait. But both sides know where the other stands. Arsenal want their man. Alvarez wants to leave. And Atletico — provided the money is right — appear willing to let it happen.

Don’t be surprised if this one moves quickly once the World Cup dust settles.
