The summer’s biggest transfer saga just got more complicated. Arsenal have made it clear they won’t meet Real Madrid’s €170 million asking price for Vinicius Junior. But the Gunners aren’t walking away, either.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, Florentino Perez wants €170m (£145.6m) for his Brazilian superstar. Arsenal’s counter? They want a deal done for less than €150m (£128.5m). That’s a gap of at least €20 million — and neither side seems ready to blink first.
So where does this leave the biggest potential Premier League signing in years?
Arteta Is Leading the Charge
This isn’t just boardroom posturing. Mikel Arteta has reportedly taken personal control of the pursuit. Spanish publication AS reported that the Arsenal boss has already spoken directly with Vinicius Junior, outlining how the club’s 2026-27 project would revolve around him.
That’s a bold pitch. And it’s one that apparently resonated.
Arsenal’s interest isn’t a whim, either. It follows a disappointing loss in the Morgan Rogers race, where Chelsea swooped in with a £117m deal the Gunners refused to match. Now Arteta wants a genuine upgrade, not a consolation prize.
ESPN confirmed that Arsenal have been studying the feasibility of a deal for weeks. Sky Sports first reported the Gunners’ interest back in late July, noting that Vinicius was one of several forward targets alongside Julian Alvarez and Bradley Barcola.
But Vinicius is the priority now. And Arteta wants him badly.
The Money Puzzle
Here’s where it gets interesting. Reports from The Telegraph indicate Arsenal are prepared to offer Vinicius wages north of £400,000+ per week. That would make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history — comfortably surpassing Bukayo Saka’s reported £300,000-a-week deal.
The financial package could also include a sign-on bonus and image rights, per The Athletic. It’s a staggering commitment for a club that has traditionally been careful with its wage structure.

That dynamic actually helps Arsenal. Madrid need this sale if Vinicius won’t re-sign. And right now, all signs point to a standoff between player and club.
Can Arsenal Actually Pull This Off?
It’s a fair question. The Gunners won the Premier League last season and reached the Champions League final. They’ve already agreed an £80m deal for Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle. Signing Vinicius Junior on top of that would signal a level of ambition few Premier League clubs have ever shown.
