Arteta to Fans: “We Don’t Want Spectators, We Want Players in the Stands”

Mikel Arteta has once again called on Arsenal fans to make The Emirates a fortress, not just with their presence, but with their passion. Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash, the Gunners boss underlined how vital the home atmosphere is to the team’s success this season.

The atmosphere is key, capital, one of the most important things and I love that because we don’t expect supporters to turn up to the stadium,” Arteta said, highlighting that Arsenal’s supporters play as crucial a role as the players on the pitch.

The Spaniard stressed that the fans’ energy can lift the squad, especially after a demanding midweek Champions League tie.

We want them just to play the game with us, which is very different. In order to do that, you have to be in your seat with a certain behaviour, with a certain body language and it’s a good test, Sunday at 2pm, how we’re going to turn up after a big Champions League game.”

Arteta’s message is clear; complacency has no place at The Emirates. The manager believes that if Arsenal are to take the next big step in their title pursuit, the connection between the players and supporters must be stronger than ever.

If we’re going to go to another step and do something that we didn’t do last year, everybody has to turn up to the stadium with that mindset, so that’s what I want to see,” he added.

With The Emirates roaring and Arteta’s side in fine form, Sunday’s clash will be another test, not just for the players, but for the fans who have helped turn North London into one of the most intimidating venues in the Premier League.
