Martin Ødegaard Blow: Arsenal Captain Withdraws from Norway Squad After Knee Injury Scare
Arsenal’s 2–0 win over West Ham should’ve been all smiles, goals from Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, a statement victory, and another dominant display. But one worrying moment stole the headlines: Martin Ødegaard limping off before halftime.
The skipper went down after a nasty knee-to-knee clash with West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville. He tried to carry on but couldn’t, eventually replaced by Martin Zubimendi. Mikel Arteta admitted afterwards the incident “looked serious,” and now the update confirms Arsenal’s worst fears.
According to the club’s official statement, Ødegaard has suffered a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury to his left knee. He’s now pulled out of Norway’s squad for their upcoming games against New Zealand and Israel, staying behind in London for treatment.
The Gunners confirmed he’ll remain at the Sobha Realty Training Centre throughout the international break for intensive rehab.
A report from Physio Scout revealed the possible recovery times:
“1–3 weeks for a grade 1 injury, 3–6 weeks for grade 2, and 6–10+ weeks for grade 3.”
Thankfully, they added a grade 3 injury ‘appears unlikely,’ which is some much-needed relief for worried Arsenal.
It’s still unclear exactly how long Ødegaard will be out, but his absence is a massive blow for both Arsenal and Norway. The midfielder has been the heartbeat of Mikel Arteta’s side, and losing him now couldn’t come at a worse time.
Norway boss Ståle Solbakken will also be cursing his luck, missing both his captain and his creative engine ahead of key fixtures.
