Should Arsenal Swap Gyokeres for Alvarez? Thierry Henry Says No

Arsenal explored a Gyokeres-for-Alvarez swap with Atletico Madrid, but Thierry Henry warns against it. Latest on the £432m transfer saga and Morgan Rogers.

Gyokeres-for-Alvarez Swap Explored With Atletico Madrid

Arsenal’s summer just got a lot more interesting. Reports from talkSPORT reveal the Gunners explored offering Viktor Gyokeres to Atletico Madrid as a makeweight in a deal for Julian Alvarez, the Argentine striker protected by a staggering £432m release clause. It’s a move that’s split opinion among fans, pundits, and even club legends.

But here’s the thing — does it actually make sense?

Why Alvarez? And Why Now?

Let’s not pretend Arsenal don’t have a problem. Mikel Arteta’s side scored just 71 Premier League goals last season. That’s not title-retaining form. Yes, they won the league, but anyone watching knew the attack needed work.

Gyokeres contributed 14 Premier League goals in his debut campaign. Respectable on the surface. Dig deeper, though, and concerns start to surface:

  • Only 11 of those were non-penalty goals.
  • Eight came against teams finishing in the bottom eight.
  • His impact against top-half opposition was limited at best.

Alvarez, by contrast, delivered 20 goals and nine assists across 49 appearances for Atletico. More importantly, his ability to link play and drop between the lines sets him apart from most centre-forwards in world football.

He’s currently starring for Argentina at the World Cup, too. His stunning 112th-minute strike against Switzerland in the quarter-finals reminded everyone why clubs are queuing up.

Barcelona have already had a bid worth €100m rejected. Real Madrid went as high as €150m and got the same answer. Atletico aren’t budging easily — and they certainly don’t want to sell to a domestic rival. That could work in Arsenal’s favour.

Henry’s Warning: Don’t Sacrifice What You’ve Built

Not everyone at Arsenal is convinced the swap is wise. Club legend Thierry Henry weighed in and didn’t hold back.

“Gyokeres gives Arsenal something different — power, presence, aggression and goals,” Henry told Football365. “He’s the type of striker defenders hate facing.”

Henry went further, cautioning that a straight exchange would alter Arsenal’s attacking identity entirely. “If you’re talking about a straight swap, I’d be very careful because you’re not just exchanging players, you’re changing the identity of your attack.”

His preferred outcome? Keep both. “The dream scenario would be finding a way to have players of that level in the same squad,” Henry said. “That’s how title-winning teams become dynasty teams.”

It’s hard to argue with him. TEAMtalk reported that both Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta remain huge admirers of Gyokeres, believing he still has significant room to develop. A swap currently appears unlikely.

Gyokeres himself addressed the speculation while on World Cup duty with Sweden. He made clear he’s happy in north London. After helping deliver Arsenal’s first Premier League crown in over two decades, that’s hardly surprising.

The Bigger Picture at the Emirates

The Alvarez saga doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Arsenal confirmed Leandro Trossard’s departure to Besiktas on July 14 in a deal worth around €20m, according to The Athletic. That creates a gap on the left flank — one that Gabriel Martinelli, with just a single Premier League goal last season, hasn’t filled convincingly.

That’s where Morgan Rogers comes in. FootballTransfers reported that Arsenal are “very, very close” to agreeing personal terms with the Aston Villa and England forward. Villa want around £130m, though industry sources expect the final fee to settle closer to £100m with add-ons.

Rogers offers something Arsenal currently lack — the ability to carry the ball through central areas with power and directness. The Guardian and The Athletic both confirm he’s the club’s top summer target.

Still, even Rogers and Alvarez wouldn’t solve everything. Without a creative deep-lying midfielder — someone in the mould of Bruno Guimaraes — Arsenal’s forwards could continue to be starved of service. That’s a separate problem, but it’s connected.

So where does this leave us? Arsenal are clearly ambitious. They’re not sitting on last season’s title and hoping for the best. The Alvarez interest is real, the Rogers pursuit is advanced, and Trossard’s exit signals a squad being reshaped with intent.

But the Gyokeres question remains the most fascinating piece of the puzzle. Do you sacrifice a player who scored 21 goals in his debut season — and helped end a 22-year title drought — for an upgrade that isn’t guaranteed to arrive? Thierry Henry doesn’t think so. And right now, it looks like Arsenal’s decision-makers agree with him.
